Thus it is taught. Therefore, this nectar of the teachings enables those who practice it to attain the state of nectar in this life and future lives. Therefore, those who wish well for themselves should practice it with a sincere heart. This is a word to encourage others to accept this nectar of the teachings. Therefore, this nectar of the teachings enables those who practice it, according to their respective faculties, intentions, habits, accumulations, vehicles, and the power of conditions, to attain the state of nectar in this life and future lives in the vehicles of the Hearers and Bodhisattvas. Therefore, yogis who desire well-being, possess complete understanding, desire to abandon the solitary places of samsara, and desire to attain the state of nectar, should diligently practice this with a sincere heart. Only through this can the ultimate truth be definitely accomplished. Here, the meaning of analysis is to refute the assertions of others and to demonstrate one's own assertions in an irrefutable way, thereby revealing that all phenomena are empty of self and of what belongs to self. This is the conclusion and the fruit of प्रमाण. In this eighteenth chapter on the analysis of self and phenomena, regarding the meaning of analysis as the fruit of प्रमाण is to refute the assertions of one's own school and others that there is a person and a self of phenomena, and to demonstrate in an irrefutable way by the author himself that there is no person and no self of phenomena, thereby revealing that all phenomena are empty of self and of what belongs to self. What are the benefits of explaining the nature of self and phenomena? Furthermore, in order to refute the claim of others that this treatise is merely a dry तर्क शास्त्र that only accomplishes अल्प meanings, here we must also establish the source of reliable scriptural authority. Therefore, the Bhagavan Mother Prajnaparamita, having subdued everything with the power of supreme wisdom, asked: Having subdued everything with the power of supreme wisdom, form is neither self nor non-self. Likewise, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are also neither self nor non-self. Form, feeling, perception, formation,

Whatever is said, such as "Consciousness is not self, nor is it without self," those are established, because that shows the merit and source of the absence of self of phenomena. Similarly, in other sutras it is said: "In this there is no self, no sentient being, no life force, no person. This body is merely an aggregation of elements. To me, it appears very clearly in that way." And similarly, in other sutras it is said: "In this there is no self and no sentient being. These phenomena all have causes." And similarly, in other sutras it is said: "O Evil-born Mother, moreover, in this body of yours, there is no self, no sentient being, no man, no person, no child, no experiencer, no agent." Those are established, and this shows the merit and source of the absence of self of the person. Thus, those sources of faith are established as the source of the merit of showing the absence of inherent existence of self and phenomena. That which is shown by this treatise as the object to be explained is also the wisdom of the teacher and the breadth of the explanation. The Extensive Explanation of the Eighteenth Chapter called "Examination of Self and Phenomena" from the Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, Lamp of Wisdom, composed by the teacher Bhāviveka, completed by the teacher Avalokitaśāntarakṣita. Now, in order to show the absence of inherent existence of time by refuting the distinctions of the contradictory aspects of emptiness, the nineteenth chapter, called "By the Power of Meaning," is composed. The word "by power" here should also be regarded as the meaning of the cause of entering into a promise, and as the meaning of connecting with what comes from below in the text. The meaning of the words is as before. Thereupon, having made it the meaning of the cause of entering into a promise, now it is said, "Now, by refuting the distinctions of the contradictory aspects of emptiness," because when the treatise writer composed the first chapter, Examination of Conditions, he made a promise that all things are unborn. Therefore, here too, the treatise writer enters into the meaning of the cause of how he made the promise before.

In this regard, it is said thus: Emptiness is one's own tenet. The opposing tenet is the opponent's tenet, which is to say that things inherently exist. The so-called difference is that the opponent states that things inherently exist, establishing the prior tenet, and then, from the ultimate point of view, the inherent nature of things is only existent, because it is the cause of manifestation. For example, like a lamp. To establish that things inherently exist, the reason is that the inherent nature of things is the cause of making the three times manifest, and so on. The so-called refutation is that, in terms of refutation, the nineteenth chapter is composed. Combining with the following text, in terms of meaning, it is said that in order to show that time is without inherent existence, the nineteenth chapter is composed. Therefore, the meaning of the nineteenth chapter on examining time, which is stated in the following text, is to show that time is without inherent existence, so in this regard, it is said thus. What is the result of this treatise? In what way is that result obtained? Showing that time is without inherent existence is the result of this treatise, and that result is obtained by refuting the difference of the tenet that is incompatible with emptiness, therefore, the commentator only shows the first result arising from skillful means in this section connecting the treatise. In order to show the difference of the tenet that is incompatible with emptiness, it is said here: From the ultimate point of view, the inherent nature of things is only existent, because it is the cause of manifestation, for example, like a lamp. Whatever does not exist is not the cause of manifestation, for example, like a garment made of turtle hair. The inherent nature of things is the cause of making the three times manifest, therefore it is only existent. These are the subject, the property to be established, the establishing property, and the example of the dissimilar property.
