And greed and hatred, etc., are because they are my qualities. If I become selfless, because there is no basis, its qualities will not exist. For arguments like this, if I myself do not exist, how can my fruits and qualities exist? Therefore, this itself is that the meaning of the argument is not established, there is no example, and it is also contrary to the meaning of the argument. These faults should be used to answer. Like this, not clinging to self and what belongs to self in the external and internal is seeing reality as it is. The yogi meditates on this and proclaims it. By meditating on this and proclaiming it, the manifest clinging to self and what belongs to self will gradually subside. Therefore, the yogi strives for accurate discernment in order to pacify self and what belongs to self. For the sake of the peace of self and what belongs to self, clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self will disappear. This shows the fruit of meditating on the way of practice as described above. Like this, for the sake of the manifest clinging to self and what belongs to self gradually subsiding, clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self will disappear, which shows the fruit of meditating on the selflessness of the person. Those who claim to have a self will also refute, saying that I do exist, because for things like the body, senses, and mind, etc., that self and what belongs to self do not exist, those who truly know will generate the correct view of not having clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self. For things that do not exist, like the son of a barren woman, there will be no such situation. In the state of liberation, there is no clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self, therefore having such knowledge, so I do exist. Therefore, the opponent proves the existence of self with the argument that the yogi truly knows and has the correct view, and says that whoever truly sees, clinging to self and clinging to what belongs to self will disappear, that itself is self, because of its existence, self and what belongs to self must also exist. These are the subject of the proposition, the property to be proven, the proving property, the example of the dissimilar side, and the near

The means of arising and the conclusion are combined in order. Here, just like the child of a barren woman, it is said that the view that there is no self-grasping and no grasping of 'I' is non-existent. Because the yogi sees the body, senses, and mind, etc., as being without self and without what belongs to self, as they truly are, there is no self-grasping and no grasping of 'I', and they have the true view of thinking that there is no self-grasping and no grasping of 'I'. Therefore, in the state of liberation, the awareness that there is no self-grasping and no grasping of 'I' is itself the self, and because it exists, the self and what belongs to self also necessarily exist, they say. In response to what they say, the commentator himself explains here: The aggregates of the noble Hearers, born in different places, are of the nature of disintegration in each moment. If one definitely observes that there is no self and no belonging to self, then because there is no thing called 'self', birth and death and these are merely phenomena, such a view arises, and so forth. Therefore, what is called no self-grasping and no grasping of 'I' is also non-existent, because even for the noble Hearers who see the aggregates as without self, such a view of grasping does not arise, let alone for the great Bodhisattvas who see all phenomena as being without inherent existence. Therefore, the awareness that there is no self-grasping and no grasping of 'I' is also non-existent, and because of its non-existence, the self and what belongs to self are also merely non-existent, thus it is taught. If the noble Hearers do not give rise to the view of no self-grasping and no grasping of 'I', it is because, in this way, the self is the object of self-grasping, and if the self does not exist, then self-grasping will not arise. Merely because of the non-existence of self-grasping, there should be no grasping of 'I' towards any internal or external thing, therefore there is no self-grasping and no grasping of 'I', and apart from the designation of terms, the establishment of the self as 'I' will not arise, thus it is said. What need is there to say about the great Bodhisattvas who see all phenomena as being without inherent existence?
