Because merely refuting its distinctions in conventional terms is impossible, it does not hinder the commitment. Therefore, it is said, "That is like the sky rising." We Madhyamikas show that all distinctions of the self are emptiness in the ultimate truth, but under the power of conventional terms, we commit to saying that there is a general self, and we refute the eternal nature, omnipresence, agent, and enjoyer of the self that others have imputed, as well as the belief that the self is the uncommon cause that takes objects as its condition, namely, this body with the five aggregates and the senses. Because merely refuting its distinctions in conventional terms is impossible, it does not hinder the commitment. Therefore, the Dharma of those with reason is like the sky rising. The opponents retort: The self merely exists, because it is negated in some places. For example, here it is said that there is no water in the well, because it is negated that there is water in the well, so it is known that there is water in other places. Similarly, because the self is negated in the body, senses, and mind, it is said that there is no self in the body with the senses, because the self is negated in the body, senses, and mind, so there must be a self in other places. Therefore, I say that the self merely exists. Some who speak of the self say that because the Madhyamikas negate the self in some places of the collection of body, senses, and mind, the self merely exists in the realm of the self other than that. Those are the subject, the Dharma to be established, the Dharma that establishes, the example, the proximate connection, and the conclusion, which are connected in order. For example, just as in this world it is said that there is no water in the well, because it is negated that there is water in the well, so it is known that there is water in other places. You Madhyamikas say here that there is no self in the collection of body, senses, and mind, because you negate it, so there must be a self in the realm other than those, therefore I say that the self merely exists. The answer to this is that the commentator himself says here that in the internal sources of birth, the agent Ishvara, the agent Pradhana, the agent Time, and the agent Nirgrantha's son do not exist, thus negating them.

Because for me, as for any other author, there is no absence of results, it is uncertain. In reality, because water and so on are not established, there is no example, and this is not reasonable. Thus, it is shown that the reason for the opponent's proof is uncertain, and because there is no example, it is not reasonable. This is for those who hold their own and others' views, who believe that the internal sources are not created by the author Ishvara, the chief, time, and the son of the non-greedy. When they negate that the internal sources are not the result of those authors, they also see that for others, the results created by those authors are also absent. Therefore, just because it is negated in some places, for example, negating that there is no water in the well, just as it is known that there is water in other places, the aggregates of body, senses, and consciousness are negated as selfless, will it therefore become that there is a self other than them? Or, just because it is negated in some places, for example, negating that the internal sources are not the result of the author Ishvara and so on, just as it is absent for others, the aggregates of body, senses, and consciousness are negated as selfless, will it therefore become that it is also selfless in other places? This is uncertain, therefore, the opponent's reason "just because it is negated in some places" is uncertain, so it is not reasonable. In reality, because water and so on are not established, the opponent's example "here there is no water in the well," just as because it is negated in the well, it is known that there is water in other places, this is non-existent, so this is also not reasonable. Some of the Samkhyas also criticize the previously shown inference of negating the self, that is, the Samkhyas were previously pointed out by the Madhyamikas that, in reality, it is possible to know that the five aggregates of nature, which have the characteristics of being changeable, feeling, grasping at signs, manifesting actions, and distinguishing, are not the self, because they are the nature of arising and ceasing, like a pot. Through the shown inference, the five aggregates and the body are also not the uncommon cause of the object of the self, because they are arising and ceasing.
