So it is said. In response to that saying, the commentator here says: If one does not ascertain the nature of the self from the principles of one's own philosophical system, but asserts the existence of a general self in conventional terms, then it is arguing for something already established, so it is said. If you who speak of the self do not ascertain the nature of the self arising from the principles of your philosophical system, which has distinctions such as being permanent and all-pervasive, but assert that there is a commonly known self in conventional terms, then it is arguing for something already established. Therefore, your arguments will become meaningless, as it shows. If so, how is it arguing for something already established? Therefore, in our teachings, the term 'self' is truly applicable to consciousness, but is imputed to birth and so on. For example, just as one wants to designate a chariot based on its parts, one wants to designate a sentient being based on the aggregates, and consciousness is what takes rebirth, therefore it is called 'self,' so it is said. If the mind is not the actual object of the term 'self' and not the actual object of the wisdom that knows it as 'self,' it should be understood, because it is created, like the body, if it is said in this way, then above, the Madhyamika says, 'In our teachings, the term 'self' is truly applicable to consciousness, but is imputed to birth and so on,' in that context, those who speak of the self here say that the term 'self' is not truly applicable to consciousness, but that a self different from consciousness actually exists elsewhere, these are words establishing that. Those are the subject, the object to be established, the means of establishing, and the example, to be connected in order. For example, just as the body, because it is created, is not the actual object of the term 'self' and not the actual object of the wisdom that knows it as 'self,' it should be understood, so too, the mind, because it is created, is not the actual object of the term 'self' and not the actual object of the wisdom that knows it as 'self,' it should be understood, so it is said. In response to that, the commentator himself says. That

Here, if the opponent genuinely believes that the actual usage of the word "I" and the meaning of the mind that understands it as "I" are not in accordance with reality, then it is a re-establishment of what is already established. This is because we want to completely abandon all statements about "I." If the opponent's view is that they believe the actual usage of the word "I" and the actual usage of the mind that understands it as "I" are not so, and they promise to truthfully demonstrate this, then it is an impermissible re-establishment of what is already established. Why? Because we, the Madhyamikas, also want to abandon all views of permanence and impermanence regarding "I" in all circumstances, whether in the state of the body or consciousness. However, in conventional truth, this is not reasonable. Because the imputation of sound and mind, and the ascertainment of the nature of things, are established even in the final conclusions of their own schools, so we believe. Therefore, if the opponent believes that the actual usage of the word "I" and the actual usage of the mind that understands it as "I" are not so, and they promise to demonstrate this in conventional truth, then it is unreasonable. Why? Because the imputation of sound and the ascertainment of the nature of things, and the imputation of mind and the ascertainment of the nature of things, are established even in the final conclusions of their own schools, and also, through the word "also," are established in the final conclusions of other schools, so we believe this is for the purpose of establishing conventional terms. Therefore, it can also be proven from our scriptures that the word "I" is in accordance with reality for consciousness, while for birth and so on, it is an imputation. If you do not determine the nature of "I" from the perspective of the final conclusion of your own school, but generally promise "I" in conventional truth, then it is an impermissible re-establishment of what is already established. In ultimate truth, the word "I" also cannot prove that "I" truly exists, because just as the meaning referred to by the word "lion" is also an imputation, for that object, the word "lion" is also not in accordance with reality. This is because the opponent previously said that the word "I" is merely an imputation upon the body, senses, and consciousness, and that there is no real "I" other than that.
