Just as with aggregates and elements, one cannot say that they are the same as themselves and not the same as themselves, just as one cannot say that they are permanent and impermanent. Although one cannot say that, it is not that the wise cannot understand, but rather that it is only present in the realm of knowable objects. Such a person who appears in this way will now be liberated from suffering, so liberation is reasonable, they say. In response to what they say, here, by explaining, it is shown that this is reasonable, for if things themselves exist, then it would follow that they could be said to be the same as themselves and not the same as themselves, because this contradicts the established tenets. For example, consciousness, for the object of non-conceptual activity, such as form, etc., if they themselves exist, then from the perspective of the general characteristic, they can be said to be the same as themselves, and from the perspective of their own characteristic, they can also be said to be not the same as themselves. The Dharmadhatu is also the same, from the perspective of its sameness, it can be said to be the same as itself, and from the perspective of the nature of the completely imputed and different characteristics, it can also be said to be not the same as itself. Similarly, if that person himself exists, then by inferring that things exist, it would follow that he could be said to be the same as himself and not the same as himself, therefore, by negating that he can be said to be those, there is the fault of negating the nature of the proponent, therefore it contradicts the established tenets, so that is not reasonable. In order to show another way of inferring the same, in reality, this mind of a person is not an object of existing things, because it is mind. For example, like the mind of a pot, etc. Because the person himself has not been established as real, therefore in reality he has no liberation. Having said that, those are the subject, the object to be proven, the means of proof, the example, and the conclusion, connect them in order. For example, the mind of a pot, etc., because it is mind, is not an object of existing things, therefore their object, pot, etc., has not been established as real, just like that, a person...

Since this mind is also a mind, it is not an object of real things. Therefore, its object, the person, is not established as a real thing, so there is no liberation for it in the ultimate sense. Thus, as shown above, these aspects negate that the person is not established as a real thing, and briefly state the opponent's doctrine. For example, those who speak of the self establish the self by the example of the person, and establish the object by the example of the dharma. Since their person and dharma are not produced, they are not established as existing, so there is no example. Therefore, they cannot prove to the Madhyamikas that the self and the object exist ultimately. If it is proven conventionally, it will be meaningless. If the person exists as a substance, because it is an object of knowledge, like form, then the opponents prove the existence of the person as a substance by the reason of being an object of knowledge. They arrange the subject, the thing to be proven, the reason, and the example in order. For example, just as form exists as a substance because it is an object of knowledge, so too does the person exist as a substance because it is an object of knowledge. In response to that, the commentator says that it is uncertain by the horns of a rabbit, etc. Because the horns of a rabbit, etc., are seen as objects of knowledge even though they do not exist as substances. Therefore, it is uncertain whether the person exists as a substance like form because it is an object of knowledge, or whether it does not exist as a substance like the horns of a rabbit because it is an object of knowledge. Therefore, the meaning of the reason is not established. Not only is it uncertain, but it is also meaningless. Because being an object of knowledge does not arise without impermanence, etc., it is also meaningless because it establishes a dharma that is inconsistent with the eternal. For example, being an object of knowledge like a pot is also impermanent and
