If it is said, "achieved from passing away," then the Śrāvaka Sthavira-putra school says that the person (pudgala) is not to be spoken of as the same as or different from the skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus, nor is it to be spoken of as permanent or impermanent. Therefore, the faults of pointing out two extremes do not harm us. Such a person is said to pass away. As an answer to their saying that, here the commentator says: That is not good, even if it has been established that a person who is not to be spoken of as permanent or impermanent exists as a real entity, liberation is unreasonable from the ultimate point of view, because it is dependently designated. For example, like a pot, it will be harmed by inference. They say that those are the subject of the proposition (dharmin), the property to be established (sādhya-dharma), the property that establishes (sādhana-dharma), the example (dṛṣṭānta), and the conclusion (nigamana), to be applied in order. For example, just as a pot is not reasonable for liberation because it is dependently designated, similarly, although a person who is not to be spoken of as permanent or impermanent is not truly existent, if, for the time being, it is established as truly existent as the opponent desires, it is also unreasonable for liberation from the ultimate point of view because it is dependently designated. Because inferring existence as a real entity will harm the establishment of the existence of passing away. In order to show another reason for that same reasoning, whatever is real is impermanent, for example, like form, etc., because inferring reality itself is the nature of impermanence, and because the nature of what can be expressed eliminates the nature of what cannot be expressed, there is the fault of eliminating the distinction of the subject of the proposition for the proposition of saying that it exists as a real entity. Furthermore, if there is a person in the moment of the realm of passing away without remainder of aggregates, then it will become the fault of permanence; if there is not, then it will become the fault of annihilation. Because of saying this, for the school of the Sthavira-putras who want the person who is not to be spoken of as permanent or impermanent to pass away, if in the moment of the realm of passing away without remainder of aggregates,

If there is a person, it becomes the fault of permanence, so it cannot be said to be permanent. If there is not, it becomes the fault of annihilation, so it cannot be said to be impermanent. It is not right to say that, because it has already been said before: "Saying 'exists' is grasping at permanence, saying 'does not exist' is viewing as annihilation." Therefore, it is not right. If it is not to be said as existence and non-existence, then it is speaking in accordance with the Madhyamaka. If that is the case, then the Madhyamaka previously said: "Therefore, for existence and non-existence, the wise should not abide." This is in accordance with the teachings that have been spoken. In that case, the teachings of Nirvana, which say that the person desired by the opponents cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent, are destroyed. If it is said that although it is not to be designated as existence and non-existence for the forms, etc., which are the objects of non-conceptual consciousness, the things themselves are existent, then this is what the Sthavira Nikāya says. For example, the forms, etc., which are the objects of non-conceptual consciousness arising from proximity, and the Dharmadhatu, which is the object of non-conceptual consciousness of the yogi who has reached the ultimate, although they are not to be designated as existence and non-existence, the things themselves are existent. Similarly, our person is also not to be designated as existence and non-existence, but the thing itself is existent, so it is also reasonable to attain liberation. This is the doctrine they say. How is that known? Because those who speak of self show the source arising from their own established tenets. Likewise, they say: "If in liberation there is a permanent self, if there is not, it will turn into impermanence, the person is not to be spoken of, and the wise should not know it as non-existent." They say this, at the moment of the realm of Nirvana without remainder, if there is a person, it will become the fault of permanence. If there is not, it will become the fault of annihilation. Therefore, from our tenets, how can the person be with the aggregates and birth?
