If it is said that the five aggregates and the body of form are the uncommon cause of clinging to the object of self, therefore one can know that the five aggregates are not self, then the example of a pot is not appropriate. Because pots and so on are not the uncommon cause of clinging to other things such as cloth, but are the uncommon cause of clinging to themselves. In response: Here, because it has been vowed that the five aggregates and the body are not the uncommon cause of clinging to self. Therefore, the aforementioned refutation ༄༅། cannot be a reason for refutation. We have vowed that the self of the five aggregates and the body of form does not cling to the object, therefore the five aggregates and the body are not the uncommon cause of clinging to the object of self, so this reason also exists in the pot. Like this, the pot also does not cling to the object of self, because the pot is not the uncommon cause of clinging to the object of self. Because the example is established, your three words cannot be a reason for refuting my stated argument. Fifty-ninth chapter. Or the yogi himself should examine this, etc., which shows that this treatise is a method for meditating on the selflessness of the person. Therefore, the yogi who wants to realize the selflessness of the person should examine this meaning himself. Therefore, it says: What is meant by "self" here? Is it the nature of the five aggregates? Or is it something other than the five aggregates? Here, the yogi who wants to see the suchness of the selflessness of the person, possessing complete discrimination, should examine separately and truly in this way: What is meant by "self" here? Is it the nature of the five aggregates? Or is it something other than the five aggregates? Is the self the nature of the five aggregates? Or is it merely becoming something other than the five aggregates? Here, all those who speak in other ways speak of other and non-other.

In short, one should examine them separately and accurately in this way. Why are both of these unacceptable? Regarding this, firstly, if the aggregates are the self, then they will be subject to arising and ceasing. It is said, firstly, if the aggregates themselves were the self, then they would be subject to the nature of arising and ceasing, because the aggregates themselves are of the nature of arising and ceasing. In that case, there would be many selves, and saying 'self' would also become meaningless, because the term 'self' would merely be a synonym for the aggregates. Therefore, it is unreasonable to say that the aggregates themselves are the self. To demonstrate this very point, it is said, therefore, those are not the self, because they are of the nature of arising and ceasing, like a pillar. These are the subject, the property to be proven, the proving property, and the example, to be applied in order. For example, a pillar is not the self because it is subject to arising and ceasing, similarly, those aggregates are also not the self because they are subject to arising and ceasing. If the self is other than the aggregates, it will lack the characteristics of the aggregates. If it were said that the self is other than the aggregates, then it would not have the characteristics of the aggregates, because the aggregates are characterized by arising and ceasing, therefore, since the self is other than the aggregates, it would not have the characteristics of arising and ceasing. In that case, it would become permanent, and if the self were permanent, then all efforts would become meaningless, because what is the use of doing anything to something permanent and unchanging? In that case, the very notion of the self's existence would become meaningless, because it would not be subject to any entering or leaving. Therefore, it is also unreasonable to say that the self is other than the aggregates. To demonstrate this very point, it is said, therefore, it is simply non-existent, because it does not have the characteristics of the aggregates, like a flower in the sky. These are also the subject, the property to be proven, the proving property, and the example, to be applied in order. For example, a flower in the sky is not of the nature of the aggregates, therefore
