If someone thinks that since "I" is not truly established, it should not be mentioned. This is like a widow who has no son, yet emphasizes that the color of her clothes is blue or white, which is unreasonable. Such a thought is mistaken. To this, our answer is: This view is not correct. Because the existence of "I" is for taking rebirth again, and the word "I" is to apply the concept of "I" to the object of consciousness, so it is said that consciousness is "I." As the Blessed One said, "Subduing the mind is good, subduing the mind obtains happiness." Furthermore, in other sutras it is said, "Oneself is one's own protector, who else can be the protector? The wise subdue themselves well, and can also attain the heavens." Therefore, since we universally acknowledge the "I" in a conventional sense, to eliminate misunderstandings about the "I," it is said that this statement has no fault. The Madhyamikas also acknowledge that in a conventional sense, consciousness can be called "I." Therefore, in a conventional sense, "I" is not non-existent. And those imagined by the outsiders, as the basis of happiness and so on, and as the agent, the mindless, the permanent, the all-pervasive, etc., these unrecognized "I," we are to eliminate these misunderstandings in the ultimate truth, so it is said that there is no fault. Alternatively, another line of reasoning can be employed: The body with the senses is not the uncommon object-cause of the "I" that is permanent and all-pervasive, because it is an object to be cognized, like a pillar. This is to refute those who claim that the "I" relies on the body with the senses and apprehends objects outside the body, therefore the body with the senses is the uncommon object-cause of the "I," and to present another valid cognition. The property in these arguments, as well as the property to be proven, the probans, and the example, should all be understood in order. For example, a pillar is an object to be cognized, therefore it is not the uncommon object-cause of the "I" that is permanent and all-pervasive. Similarly, the body with the senses is also an object to be cognized, therefore it is not the uncommon object-cause of the "I" that is permanent and all-pervasive. Likewise, the reasons such as "because it is not measurable" should also be understood in this way.

Furthermore, it is said, "It should be stated," which is connected to "The previous arguments are also these." Here, those who claim to have a self refute, saying, 'The five aggregates and the body are without self,' what does that mean? Previously, the Madhyamikas said, 'If the aggregates were the self, they would be subject to arising and ceasing.' When arguing, in terms of ultimate truth, one can know that the five aggregates, which have the nature of form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness, are not the self, because they are subject to arising and ceasing. For example, like a pot. To this, those who claim to have a self will contemplate, what is the meaning of that vow? And, the analogy 'like a pot' is a word for seeking unchanging flaws. Therefore, if it is said that those are without self, there is no analogy, because pots and so on also have that.' If the meaning of the Madhyamika's vow is that because those aggregates are without self, one can know that the five aggregates are not the self, then the analogy 'for example, like a pot' is inappropriate, because on our side, we also believe that pots and so on have a self. If it is said that one does not focus on that, then even so, there is no analogy, because pots and so on are the cause of objects of focus. If the meaning of the Madhyamika's vow is that the five aggregates and the body of form are not the self, because the self is not the cause of focusing on that object, so the aggregates cannot cause the self to focus on that object, therefore one can know that the five aggregates are not the self, then even so, the analogy 'for example, like a pot' is inappropriate, because the action of focusing exists both in the agent and in the object, therefore objects such as pots are also the cause of focusing. If it is said that the cause of focusing is not common, even so, there is no analogy, because pots and so on are also the non-common cause of focusing. If the meaning of the Madhyamika's vow is that the aggregates
