To refute the statement that "the self, other than consciousness, is the basis of happiness, etc.," here is shown the valid cognition. In the treatises of the Vaisheshika school, it is asserted that the self (Sanskrit: Ātman), other than the body, senses, and consciousness, which can be examined and whose meaning pervades everything, is the basis of happiness, suffering, consciousness, desire, hatred, effort, dharma, non-dharma, and knowledge. This view is now refuted. These are applied in order as the subject, the property to be proven, the reason, and the example. For example, form, etc., are things that are born and are made, therefore they are not the basis of happiness and suffering. Similarly, the meaning of words that are constant and pervade everything, other than the senses and consciousness, is also something that is born and is made, therefore it is not the basis of happiness and suffering. The details are as before. "As before" refers to the reasons in the previous inference, such as "it is something that is born," etc., which is just an example. In fact, the previous reasons, such as the result, the cause, the cause of occasional happiness, the cause of complete suffering, the cause of doubtful knowledge, and the cause of inverted knowledge, etc., can also be used to elaborate on the inference. "The self is not the lord who pervades all places, because I am a substance, like a pot," this statement is to refute the previous statement of the Vaisheshika school that "the self is pervasive of everything other than the body, senses, and consciousness," here is shown the valid cognition. In the treatises of the Vaisheshika school, it is asserted that the self that pervades everything is the lord who pervades all places, and this view is now refuted. These are applied in order as the subject, the property to be proven, the reason, and the example. For example, a pot is a substance, therefore it is not the lord who pervades all places. Similarly, I am also a substance, therefore I am not the lord who pervades all places. If the opponent says that space is uncertain, then this is the opponent's refutation of the uncertainty of the Madhyamaka school's reason, "because it is a substance."

These are words of refutation. Those people say that here, although space is a substance, it is seen as not being all-pervasive, so because it is a substance, like a pot, am I not the all-pervasive lord? Or, because it is a substance, like space, it is not certain that I am the all-pervasive lord, so the Madhyamika's reasoning is not established. In response to them, because the very existence of space as a substance is negated, and its all-pervasiveness is also negated like my all-pervasiveness, it is not uncertain. Having said this, in reality, because space is unborn, its very existence as a substance is negated, because it is not all-pervasive. And the all-pervasiveness of space is also negated like my all-pervasiveness, just as I am not the all-pervasive lord, because I am unborn, like a flower in the sky. Similarly, space is also not all-pervasive, because it is unborn, like a flower in the sky, thus it is negated, because there is no contradictory aspect, so it is not uncertain. Similarly, when I say, "I am not the agent, because I have a body, like karma," this is to show the valid cognition that refutes the previous Vaisheshikas who said, "I am the agent, different from the body, senses, and intelligence." The Vaisheshika scriptures consider me to be the agent, and this occasion refutes it. Those are also connected in order with the subject, the property to be proven, the proving property, and the example. For example, karma that is contemplated is not the agent because it has a body, similarly, I am also not the agent because I have a body with a thumb and so on. When I say, "I am also not permanent, because I am a substance, like a pot," this is to show the valid cognition that refutes the previous Vaisheshikas who said, "I am permanent, different from the body, senses, and intelligence." The Vaisheshika scriptures consider me to be permanent, and this occasion refutes it. Those are also connected in order with the subject, the property to be proven, the proving property, and the example. For example, a pot is not permanent because it is a substance, similarly, I am also.
