Here, too, one should examine the selflessness based solely on the aggregates. If those who hold to a self in this way say that the aggregates are the self, how can one know this for certain? To show its source, it is said that the Blessed One also said that all those ascetics or brahmins who truly adhere to a self, all of them truly adhere to these very five aggregates of appropriation. This is what is said. To explain what was previously stated as "refuting the arguments of others," first, to those who say that the great elements exist in the form of the body, or that it is a collection of the elements, or that it is the faculties, or that it is a collection of the faculties, or that consciousness is the self, one should say this: Because the elements, faculties, and consciousness, whether separate or combined, are characteristics of the aggregates. If they think that these are the self, then, if the aggregates are the self, how can we show the object of the aggregates as the self for the sake of convention, as in the conventional truth? Or do they think there is something else different? When those who claim to have a self separately cling to the great elements such as earth existing in the form of the body, or merely cling to the sum of the great elements, or separately cling to the faculties such as the eye, or merely cling to the sum of the faculties, or cling to consciousness as the self, one should ask them this: Because your separate or combined elements, and separate or combined faculties, and separate or combined consciousness are characteristics of the aggregates. If they think that these are the self, then how should we Buddhists show the object of the aggregates as the self for the purpose of establishing conventional terms? Or do you think that there is a "self" that can be proven in the ultimate truth? If they answer that, in any case, for the sake of proving the self, the desired purpose has been achieved, then, when asked in this way, the other party may say that, no matter what you think, or what others think, in general, for the sake of proving the existence of the self, our purpose has been achieved.

This is the word that is spoken. In order to answer the phrase "Thus it is said," the explanation is made here, therefore now it should be examined, as you wish. If the aggregates were the self, they would become subject to arising and ceasing. Because the aggregates are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Thus it is said. For the time being, if the aggregates themselves were to become the self, then they would become subject to arising and ceasing, because the aggregates are of the nature of arising and ceasing. In that case, this shows that the nature of the aggregates is to be of the nature of arising and ceasing. Thus it is said, then this first half of the verse shows that the reason for establishing that the aggregates are not the self is that the thesis is of the nature of arising and ceasing. The example is that by means of it, the elements of the outside world are connected, which are known to both the object to be proven and the proving property. Here, the very nature of being subject to arising and ceasing is also taken only in the manner of a noun. Just as the nature of the aggregates is to be subject to arising and ceasing, so too it should be known that the nature of the aggregates is also the result, the cause, the knowable, the ripened, and so on, other phenomena as well. Thus it is said, here, as the reason for establishing that the aggregates themselves are not the self, the thesis that is of the nature of arising and ceasing is shown, which is only indicated by taking the manner of a noun closely. It should be known that as the reason for establishing that the aggregates themselves are the self, it is also the result, the cause, the knowable, the ripened, and so on, other phenomena as well. In order to show the measure of that itself. Here, the words of combination are, in terms of ultimate truth, the elements and the collection of elements, the senses and the collection of senses, consciousness, the body with the senses, the body with consciousness is not the self, because it is of the nature of arising and ceasing. For example, like the external elements. Thus it is said. Those are the subject, the object to be proven, the proving property, and the example, connected in order. For example, that
