The venerable one possesses the radiance of wisdom and is indeed a scholar who elucidates the scriptures. Composed by the teacher Lekden. From the commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, the Lamp of Wisdom: The Examination of Action and Result, which is the seventeenth chapter, the extensive commentary composed by the teacher Avalokitaśāntarakṣita is complete. Now, in order to demonstrate that all conditioned phenomena are empty of self and of what belongs to self, by refuting the assertions of others and by showing one's own faultless assertions, by the power of the meaning, the eighteenth chapter will be composed. The word "by the power of" should be understood here as also having the meaning of the cause of entering into a vow, and as having the meaning of being connected with the text that follows. The meaning of the words is the same as before. Therefore, by the power of the meaning of entering into a vow as the cause, now, by refuting the assertions of others and by showing one's own faultless assertions, thus it is said. When the author composed the first chapter, the Examination of Conditions, he made a vow that all things are without arising. Therefore, here too, the author makes the same vow, by the power of the meaning of the cause of entering into a vow, thus it is said. Refuting the assertions of others is to refute the assertions of oneself and others that phenomena and persons have a self, and the following will appear: "I am the aggregates" or "I am other than the aggregates," and so on. Showing one's own faultless assertions is the assertion of the author himself that phenomena and persons are without self, and the following will appear: If the aggregates are the self, then they will be subject to arising and ceasing; if they are other than the aggregates, then they will be without the characteristics of the aggregates. And so on. By the power of the meaning of being connected with the text that follows, thus it is said, in order to demonstrate that all conditioned phenomena are empty of self and of what belongs to self, by the power of the meaning, the eighteenth chapter will be composed. The entirety of the text of the eighteenth chapter, the Examination of Self and Phenomena, is to demonstrate the selflessness of phenomena and persons.

Therefore, having been empowered by it, he spoke thus. Regarding the meaning of showing the absence of Dharma-self, by virtue of showing the emptiness of self and self-belonging in all phenomena, he spoke, "by virtue of...". Therefore, this shows that the absence of Dharma-self, which is shown in the Mahayana, is elaborated here. By virtue of showing the absence of person-self, he spoke, "by virtue of showing the emptiness of self and self-belonging." This shows the absence of person-self, which is imputed by this school and other non-Buddhist heretics. What is the fruit of this elaboration? In what way is that fruit obtained? Showing the emptiness of self and self-belonging in all phenomena is the fruit of this. By refuting the arguments stated by others, and by showing one's own flawless arguments, that fruit is obtained. Therefore, the commentator, in connecting the sections of the elaboration, shows only the method and the first fruit arising from the method. Among these, first the absence of person-self is to be shown, and later the absence of Dharma-self is to be shown. Because the teacher Aryadeva stated this order, "First, turn away from non-merit, in the middle, turn away from self, finally, turn away from all. Whoever knows this has reason." Therefore, first sentient beings are to be turned away from non-merit, then from grasping, and finally from all grasping. Whoever knows by what method this is to be done has reason. Therefore, since the object of the various ways of viewing self is also the aggregates, one should begin by examining only the aggregates, he said. Those who speak of self, imagine self in this way: some imagine self to be just the body, some as the size of a thumb, some as the size of a barley grain, some as the size of a mustard seed, some as the size of one part of a hair tip split into a hundred parts. The object of all of these is also the aggregates, because all of these are imagined only in the aggregates, therefore.
