The clarification of the subsequent inference, and just those also demonstrate that in the ultimate truth, they are without inherent existence. In order to show the approximate position of the previous party, even though the absence of inherent existence of all things has been shown, the evil speakers, due to the strong clinging habit of things having inherent existence, their wisdom declines, like those with blurred vision seeing untrue things, in order to establish their own position, they refute, therefore it is said "refute." Therefore, those who refute will say, "Regarding that which you have shown to have established your own position by closely examining it with the valid means of proof and refutation, if the valid means of proof and refutation are themselves without inherent existence, then they have no power to understand the true nature of the object that one wishes to examine, because they are without inherent existence. For example, like the view of a barren woman's son, and so on." Connect this with "they will say." This shows that the opponents will say, "In this Madhyamaka treatise, the meaning that you Madhyamikas want to establish and refute depends on the valid means of proof and refutation, and seeing that the valid means are the most important, generating respect for the valid means, through the valid means of proof and refutation, after careful examination, you have shown that your own position has been established. If your valid means of proof and refutation are without inherent existence, then they have no power to understand the true nature of the object that one wishes to examine, because they are without inherent existence, for example, just like wanting to examine the true nature of the object, such as the view of a barren woman's son, etc., they have no power to understand." This shows the subsequent inference, those are arranged in order as the subject, the property to be established, the property that establishes, and the example. For example, the view of a barren woman's son, etc., because it is without inherent existence, it has no power to understand the true nature of the object that one wishes to examine, similarly, if the valid means of proof and refutation are without inherent existence, then they are also without inherent existence.

They say that because there is no inherent existence, there is no power to understand the very nature of things that one wants to examine, those truths that have not yet been understood. However, if these things have inherent existence, then just as these things are, all things are established, so all inferences taught in all treatises are also uncertain. The opponents say, 'If the valid cognitions of establishment and refutation of you Madhyamikas have inherent existence, then just as those valid cognitions have inherent existence, all things are also established as having inherent existence. Therefore, the inferences taught by you Madhyamikas throughout the body of this treatise are also uncertain. Since your valid cognitions have inherent existence, why wouldn't all things become inherently existent just like the valid cognitions? Or, just as your valid cognitions have proven that all things are without inherent existence, it is also uncertain that all things would become without inherent existence.' Moreover, the word 'also' includes harm that is without contradiction or error. Just as you have valid cognitions and therefore show that all things are without inherent existence, we also have the reason to show that all things also have inherent existence, just as your valid cognitions have inherent existence. This is what they say. In order to answer what they say, an explanation will be given here. Therefore, what is the meaning of the opponents' reason 'because there is no inherent existence,' as stated here and so on? Is it an autonomous inference? Or is it refuting others? If it is an autonomous inference, and the opponents themselves establish that all things, including valid cognitions, are without inherent existence, then it is unestablished for oneself. If it is refuting others, saying to the Madhyamikas that all things, including valid cognitions, should become without inherent existence, then it is shown to be unestablished for others. Therefore, for the time being, if the opponents' reason 'because there is no inherent existence' is an autonomous inference, then it is unestablished for oneself.

In order to demonstrate this. If it is thought that "because the meaning of the reason lacks inherent existence, it does not exist," then it is said that for oneself, the meaning of the reason is not established. If the opponent thinks that "because the opponent's reason lacks inherent existence" refers to the opponent's own tenet, because all phenomena such as valid cognition lack inherent existence, therefore it does not exist, then for oneself, the meaning of the reason is not established. Like this, for the opponent's tenet, it is not established that all phenomena such as valid cognition lack inherent existence itself. If the opponent thinks that "because the opponent's reason lacks inherent existence" is to refute others, then in order to demonstrate that this is not established for others. If it is like that for others, then it is said that it is like that for others. If the opponent thinks that "because the opponent's reason lacks inherent existence" is a refutation of others that is independent of autonomous inference, that is, for the Madhyamikas, it is a fault that all phenomena such as valid cognition are inherently existent, then this is not established for others. Like this, we Madhyamikas do not think that all phenomena such as valid cognition are completely without inherent existence, like the view of a barren woman's son, but in conventional truth, we think that they exist as arising from causes and conditions, like illusions. Therefore, for our tenet, the valid cognition of establishment and refutation in conventional truth is not completely without inherent existence like the barren woman's son. Therefore, for those who constantly think that phenomena are real and have not realized it, it is not that they do not have the power to realize it. Now, if the opponent says that if the valid cognition of establishment and refutation does not lack inherent existence, then they do not have the power to realize the reality of phenomena that are constantly thought to be real, then if it is established from the ultimate truth, it is establishing what is already established, and if it is established from the conventional truth, then it should be explained that this is harmed by the promise. Regarding this, first, in order to explain that establishing from the ultimate truth is establishing what is already established. If from the ultimate truth, valid cognition and so on lack inherent existence, thereby eliminating the power, then it is said that this is establishing what is already established.
