The term "being" refers to the proponents of the Sarvastivada school and other teachers who assert the existence of the intermediate state (bardo). This is their argument and another example. For instance, the state of being alive is due to the continuity of name and form, relying on form, from the place of death to the place of rebirth. Because of constantly being reborn in another place, one desires to attain another place. Similarly, when sentient beings with form cease to exist, the arising of the continuity of form is also due to the continuity of name and form, relying on form, from the place of death to the place of rebirth. Because of constantly being reborn in another place, one desires to attain another place. Therefore, it is said that there is an intermediate state for those who die from the form realm and are reborn in the form realm itself or in the formless realm. Later scholars say that the state of dying and being reborn in the form realm is not interrupted by another state because it is tainted. It is like the state of dying and being reborn in the formless realm. This is an inference used by the Mahasanghika school and other teachers to establish the non-existence of the intermediate state. They are connected in order as the subject, the property to be proven, the reason, and the example. For example, just as the state of dying from the formless realm and being reborn in the formless realm or the form realm is interrupted by another state because it is tainted, so too, the state of dying from the form realm and being reborn in the form realm or the formless realm is also interrupted by another state because it is tainted. Therefore, just as there is no intermediate state for those who die from the formless realm and are reborn in the formless realm itself or the form realm, so too, there is no intermediate state for those who die from the form realm and are reborn in the form realm itself or the formless realm. Thus, by being interrupted by another state, it is shown that there is no intermediate state. Alternatively, the body that is born immediately after the state of death of embodied beings is not the body of the intermediate state.

Furthermore, the statement, "Because it is a result of maturation and belongs to the truth of suffering, like the body that is currently being used," is another inference made by the teachers of the Mahasamghika school and others to establish the absence of an intermediate state. They also apply the subject, the property to be proven, the proving property, and the example in order. For example, just as the body that is currently being used is not a body of the intermediate state because it is a result of maturation and belongs to the truth of suffering, so too, the body that is born after the death of sentient beings is also not a body of the intermediate state because it is a result of maturation and belongs to the truth of suffering. Therefore, there is no such thing as an intermediate state. By this, it is shown that there is no intermediate state because the body that is born after the death state is not a body of the intermediate state. Furthermore, the statement, "Because the mind-made body obtains another place, it follows the continuity of going," is an uncertain reason, and therefore the intermediate state is not established. This is the word of the teachers of the Mahasamghika school and others to establish the uncertainty of the reason of the teachers of the Sarvastivada school and others, "it follows the continuity of going." They say that in this sutra, it is said that the mind-made body, which is not form, obtains another place and also follows the cause of going. Therefore, why must it necessarily follow the continuity of going? For example, like a lamp, does the continuity of form of beings who perish somewhere continuously arise in another place, thus obtaining another place? Or does it follow the continuity of going like the mind-made body obtaining another place? It is uncertain whether the continuity of form of sentient beings with form who perish somewhere arises in another place not continuously, thus obtaining another place. Therefore, the intermediate state is not established. In order to show another rationality of that same reason, the intermediate state...
