The teachers of the Sarvastivadins and others say that consciousness, conditioned by karma, obtains existence by being born into it. Just as there is no intermediate existence between dying from the formless realm and being born into the formless realm itself or the realm of form, similarly, there is no name or continuum of form called the intermediate existence between dying from the realm of form and being born into the realm of form itself or the formless realm. Rather, they believe that one goes directly from the existence of death to the existence of birth, like a worm moving in a lotus. Some of the former say that the continuum of form of sentient beings with form who perish anywhere is born continuously in another place, and therefore they believe that it is obtained in another place. Because if there is form, the continuum of karma follows, like a lamp. This is the inference that follows the establishment of the existence of the intermediate existence by the teachers of the noble Sarvastivadins and others. They apply the subject, the thing to be proven, the reason, and the example in order. For example, if a lamp has form, the continuum of karma follows, and it is born continuously in another place, therefore they believe that it is obtained in another place; similarly, the continuum of form of sentient beings with form who perish anywhere is also because if there is form, the continuum of karma follows, and it is born continuously in another place, therefore they believe that it is obtained in another place. Therefore, between dying from the formless realm and being born into the formless realm itself or the realm of form, there is no name or continuum of form called the intermediate existence; but between dying from the realm of form and being born into the realm of form itself or the formless realm, there is a name and continuum of form called the intermediate existence. Or, because one is born from the place of death to another place to which one goes by relying on the name and continuum of form, just like when one is alive.
