Here, the nature, order, and connection of the twelve branches of dependent origination in terms of conventional language will be extensively explained. Now, the nature, order, and connection of what is shown by the first verse, "Conditioned by ignorance, actions arise," will be explained. Among these, what is called ignorance is a dharma that is contrary to wisdom, or because the twelve branches of dependent origination are not understood as selfless, unwavering, and momentary, it is called ignorance, which shows the nature of ignorance. What is called "obscured by it" means covered, which shows the person obscured by ignorance. The order and connection are connected by "they perform actions." Here, it must be definitely understood that "only those obscured by ignorance perform actions, not those not obscured," which shows the word connection of "only by being obscured." Do not definitely understand "obscured by ignorance, only actions are performed," because the remaining branches, such as consciousness, also have that cause, which shows that the words "only actions are performed" are not connected. Also, do not definitely understand "only by ignorance being obscured," because there are other afflictions as well, which shows that the words "only by ignorance" are not connected. Here, if others say, if the cause of actions also has other afflictions besides ignorance, why is only ignorance taken? The answer is, the cause of actions does indeed have afflictions such as desire, but ignorance is taken because it is the main one, just like a king conquering and the movement of a conch shell. For example, when a king leads an army to conquer other places, although there are also retinues and armies, because the king is the main one, it is said that the king conquered. Also, when creatures called conch shells, male and female, move in the sea, the female leads, and the children follow behind.
