Saying that this shows the very absence of inherent existence is the conclusion and the fruit of valid cognition. In this twenty-fifth chapter of the Examination of Nirvana, examining the fruit of valid cognition of the meaning of the distinction is that other debaters say at the beginning of this distinction: If all these are empty, then there is no arising and no ceasing. From what is abandoned and ceased, do you want to attain Nirvana? Thus, for those who say the very absence of inherent existence, there is no attainment of Nirvana from that which has no inherent existence, because there is no arising and no ceasing, like the son of a barren woman. If you want these formations to attain Nirvana, then you should know that those formations only have inherent existence in the ultimate sense, because Nirvana is attained by abandoning afflictions and ceasing name and form. For those who do not have horns like yaks, etc., there is the fault of asserting that they do not exist. If all this is not empty, then there is no arising and no ceasing. From what is abandoned and ceased, do you want to attain Nirvana? Such words show that Nirvana has no inherent existence. What are the qualities in showing that Nirvana has no inherent existence? In order to dispel others who say that this display is only established by dry reasoning, here also the source of reliable scriptures should be established. Therefore, in all the Mahayana sutras, there is no Nirvana, the Protector of the World taught, like the knot of space is abandoned, like space itself is liberated. What is said is established, just as a craftsman uses a long thread to do sewing work, that thread makes a knot in the sky, and is released from the sky itself, so the Bhagavan who realized enlightenment also taught that Nirvana and other non-existent things exist in conventional terms, and those themselves are also taught to have no inherent existence in the ultimate sense. As it is said: Here there is nothing to be removed, nor is there anything to be shown, in reality.

It is like saying, "See correctly, and you will be liberated when you see correctly." Similarly, in the Sutra Requested by Brahma, the Noble One, it says: "Bhagavan, those who seek the arising or ceasing of some dharmas will not have a Buddha arising from them. Bhagavan, those who completely seek nirvana from things will not have true liberation from samsara. Why is that? Bhagavan, it is because all signs are completely pacified and all movements are nearly pacified, that is nirvana. Bhagavan, those foolish people who completely seek nirvana from things are falling into the views of non-Buddhists after having ordained in this well-spoken Dharma-vinaya. Bhagavan, if someone seeks complete nirvana of all dharmas, just as one seeks sesame oil from sesame seeds and ghee from milk, then I say that those who seek nirvana from things are arrogant non-Buddhists. Bhagavan, those practitioners of yoga who have entered correctly do not seek the arising or ceasing of any dharma, nor do they seek to attain any dharma, nor do they seek to realize it." These and other statements are also established. Their meaning is that those individuals with excessive pride who contemplate the arising and ceasing of dharmas, who completely seek nirvana from things, and who, with regard to the complete nirvana of all dharmas, for example, seek sesame oil from sesame seeds and ghee from milk, in the same way that they seek to obtain the thusness that has become a thing by removing the defilements such as afflictions from the thing that is the continuum of sentient beings, those people have embarked on the path of wrong views. For those people, there is no arising of a Buddha, no liberation from samsara, and no attainment of nirvana. Those foolish people, although they appear to have ordained in this well-spoken Dharma-vinaya, have actually fallen into the views of non-Buddhists. Those practitioners of yoga who have entered correctly, who see all dharmas as equality, and who do not desire the arising or ceasing, attainment or realization of any dharma, are those who are in the non-abiding nirvana.
