Just as it is not like that, if one says that there is no external object, then in conventional terms, it is also slandering the objective condition, because it contradicts the teachings, which say that eye consciousness arises in dependence on the eye and form, etc. If the Mind-Only school believes that there are no external objects even in the relative truth, then this view contradicts all reason, scripture, and valid cognition, therefore it is unreasonable. Thus it is taught. These are also arranged in order as the subject, the thing to be proven, the means of proof, the example, and the conclusion. For example, the self-nature of the apprehending aspect of the eye consciousness is the objective condition because it possesses the cause of the eye, just as the self-nature of the apprehending aspect of the eye consciousness does not possess the grasping aspect of the eye consciousness. Similarly, the apprehending aspect of the eye consciousness that the opponents claim also possesses the cause of the eye, therefore it is the objective condition, and it does not possess the apprehended aspect of the eye consciousness. Therefore, if the Mind-Only school, as they believe, has no external objects, then in conventional terms, it is also slandering the objective condition, therefore it contradicts what they themselves said, that eye consciousness arises in dependence on the eye and form, etc., so that is unreasonable. Therefore, the way the Madhyamikas speak, that in conventional terms, internal consciousness arises in dependence on the objective condition, the external objects, is established by scripture and reason, and that must be acknowledged. If the Yogacara here argues that although there is no external objective condition, the alaya-consciousness itself appears as the nature of the object, therefore it is the objective condition, so it does not contradict the teachings. To answer this previous point raised from their minds, here the commentator says: Consciousness abides by its own nature, because there is a cause, it is unreasonable not to see, therefore it is not established without an object. Thus it is said, if the alaya-consciousness is the objective condition, then...

That is because, before transformation, it abides with certainty (Sanskrit, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, niścita, निश्चित) by its own nature. If there is a cause, then the seeing (Sanskrit, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, dēkhanē, देखना) consciousness of form should not be non-existent either. Because, just as the cause, the all-ground consciousness, is always present, the eye consciousness that is conditioned by it should also always arise. But that is not the case. When the condition of the object, the external object, is present, then the eye consciousness arising from its presence arises. If it is not present, it does not arise. Therefore, the condition of the object, the external object, cannot be non-existent. If someone thinks: 'Relying on the object, non-object arises. Relying on non-object, non-object arises.' As it is said, there is no fault. This sentence is spoken by the Yogacara school, which considers itself to be the Mind-Only school. It believes that the object refers to consciousness, and relying on consciousness, non-object arises, which means that there is no external object. Relying on the recognition of no external object, there is no grasping. Because there is no grasping, there is no grasper. In the manner of arising, the condition of the object, the external object, does not exist, therefore there is no fault. This is their thought. In response, the commentator says: 'The answer to that school has already been given. If the arising of Mind-Only could be established, then your view could also be established, but in fact it has not been established.' It is saying that if relying on the object, non-object arises, and relying on non-object, non-object arises could be established, then your school could also be established. But we have already refuted arising in the ultimate truth, therefore your school cannot be established. Even if it exists, how could there be no consciousness? This sentence says that even if Mind-Only exists, as I said before, consciousness abides with certainty (Sanskrit, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, niścita, निश्चित) by its own nature. If there is a cause, then seeing (Sanskrit, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, dēkhanē, देखना) should not be non-existent. Therefore, without an object, it cannot be established. As said before, it still insists that the condition of the object, the external object, cannot be non-existent. If it is said that because there is no arising, it is meaningless, then
