Due to the power of the manifest formation of the earth, the body, which is the aggregate of various forms; enjoyment, which are the various objects; and places, which are the various realms of the world, also appear. These are manifestations of the inner mind, different from external objects, like illusions, etc., which arise from their respective causes and conditions. To show that very reason, if it did not exist, it would not appear as such. For example, a rabbit's horn would not appear. If external objects did not exist, but appeared to the senses and consciousness by the power of the mind, then things that do not exist, like a rabbit's horn, should also appear to the senses and consciousness. However, those things do not appear, but external objects do appear, so they are not non-existent. The meaning of the sutra spoken by the Blessed One, "Mind-Only," is also because there is no agent or experiencer other than the mind, so it is said to be Mind-Only, because this has been acknowledged, so it cannot be determined in that way. Through "The son of the Victorious One from the scriptures said, for example, the three realms are Mind-Only," the meaning of "Mind-Only" is shown, saying that Mind-Only is to negate the agent, not to negate the things themselves. Therefore, it cannot be determined that the object is negated as the opponent desires. In order to show other views that the Yogacharas have not understood, which have been clearly identified by the masters and commentators, from the sixth Bodhisattva ground it says, when a Bodhisattva separately observes the arising and ceasing of the twelve links of existence, he thinks, "This mere aggregate of suffering is accomplishing the tree of suffering, but there is no agent or experiencer." Then he thinks, "Due to attachment to the agent, actions manifest; for things without an agent, ultimately, there is no object either." Then he thinks, "For example, the three realms are Mind-Only, Mind-Only can

separated, and manifestly assembled by the mind. Having definitively determined that there is no creator such as Ishvara, etc., O sons of the Victorious One, like this, these three realms are only mind. Having said that, the word "only" is to be understood as negating the creator, and not as negating the object. Having said this, in the Sutra of the Ten Bhumis, it says: O sons of the Victorious One, like this, these three realms are only mind. The explanation of the intention of what was said in that way is from the sixth bhumi itself. Because it was said in that way, therefore, the sound of the word "only mind" is to be understood as meaning the negation of the creator, and not the meaning of the negation of the object. Similarly, in the Sutra of the Descent into Lanka, it is also said to negate the creator. It says: "The person, the cause, and the aggregates, Likewise, the conditions and the dust particles, The chief, the lord, the creator, I say are only mind." Having said that, here it is to be known that only mind itself is the creator. The person, the cause, the aggregates, the conditions, the dust particles, the chief, and the lord are not the creators. Like this, among those who speak well, some think that the person is the creator, some think that the cause is the creator, some think that the aggregates, some think that the conditions, some think that the dust particles, some think that the chief, some think that the lord is the creator. Those are not the creators, but are separated by only mind, and manifestly assembled by only mind. Therefore, I say it is only mind. That scriptural authority also explains that the sound of the word "only mind" is the meaning of negating the creator, and not the meaning of negating the object. Some say this: material objects are the nature of mind, because they are the objects of consciousness, like the immediately preceding condition. If they say that, that is the statement of the practitioners of yoga to establish that material objects are the nature of mind. Those can be arranged in order as the subject, the thing to be established, the means of establishing, and the example. For example, the immediately preceding condition is the nature of mind because it is the object of consciousness, just like that.

Because material objects are also objects of consciousness, they are the nature of mind, thus establishing the claim that there are no external objects. In response to this claim, this commentary states: Mental factors are not necessarily certain. This is because the reason given by Yogācārins, "because it is an object of consciousness," is uncertain. For here, although mental factors are objects of consciousness, they are seen as not being the nature of mind. Therefore, why should material objects become the nature of mind simply because they are objects of consciousness, like the immediately preceding condition? Or, because they are objects of consciousness, like mental factors, material objects would not become the nature of mind, which is uncertain, and therefore the opponent's reason is not established. Even if it is said that form and so on are the nature of mind and mental factors, the Yogācārins would say this: Form, sound, smell, taste, and touch are the nature of mind and mental factors, because they are objects of consciousness, like the immediately preceding condition, material objects are the nature of mind. This is to show their argument. In response, it is said that mind and mental factors are not separately determined. Even so, the opponent's reason, "because it is an object of consciousness," is also uncertain. For in any consciousness, mind and mental factors are seen as having different natures. Therefore, why should form and so on become the nature of mind simply because they are objects of consciousness, like the immediately preceding condition? Or, because they are objects of consciousness, like mind and mental factors, one's nature is not the other's, similarly, those who think that form and so on are the nature of mind and mental factors, form and so on are not the nature of mental factors.
