Through the power (of the Buddha's) blessing, when Śrāvakas and others hear the Dharma and focus on attaining the fruits such as entering the stream, consciousness arises. And through the power of the blessings of the gods, consciousness arises focusing on virtue and non-virtue. And initially, relying on the awareness of others' prophecies, consciousness arises. (You) see these as not arising dependent on external conditions. Therefore, for the time being, since they are those who are in meditative absorption, etc., just like the mind in a dream that enters due to obtaining its own habitual tendencies, will consciousness arise independently of external conditions? Or, since they are those who are in meditative absorption, etc., is it through the power of the Buddha, or through the power of the gods, or like the consciousness that arises initially from the awareness of prophecy, will consciousness arise dependent on external conditions? This is uncertain. Therefore, those reasons of the opponents are untenable. If the Yogācārins do not accept that in conventional truth, through the power of the Buddha's blessing, when Śrāvakas and others hear the Dharma and consciousness arises focusing on attaining the fruits such as entering the stream, then the fault of the Buddha's appearance becoming meaningless would occur, which is not acceptable. Because you believe that even without relying on external conditions such as the Buddha's appearance and teaching the Dharma, consciousness arises focusing on attaining the fruits such as entering the stream. Furthermore, if that is the case, for you, it will also become that the meaning belonging to conventional truth does not appear. Therefore, the Yogācārins, as they wish, declare that even in conventional truth, consciousness arises independently of external conditions such as objects and sense faculties. Then, the meaning belonging to conventional truth, objects and sense faculties, etc., will also become the fault of not appearing, which is undesirable. For the time being, they think that the inference of the Yogācārins—consciousness is empty of meanings such as Caitra, because it is one who is in meditative absorption, and because it is a result, and because it is impermanent, and because it is immovable, and because it enters in time.

For example, just like the mind of a dream that arises from obtaining one's own habitual tendencies, because that reason and example are not established, it shows that the meaning of the proposition that there is no external object is not established. Now, the Yogācāra school, according to the scriptures, says: "External appearances are non-existent, like the body, enjoyment, and place. The mind appears in various ways, I say it is only mind." Thus, those who establish that there is no external object are interpreting the meaning of that scripture in a reversed way. The meaning of that is that the external object is not inherently existent in the ultimate sense. Because the meaning of the external object is not inherently existent, the scripture says: "External appearances are non-existent." And, the conventional external objects exist like illusions and so on, the scripture says: "Like the body, enjoyment, and place, the mind appears in various ways." And, because there is no agent or eater other than the mind, the scripture says: "I say it is only mind." Therefore, it should be shown that in the conventional sense, external objects do exist. Therefore, because it is not inherently existent, although the meaning of the external object is not inherently existent, the scripture says: "External appearances are non-existent." It shows the meaning of the scripture, because it is not inherently existent in the ultimate sense. Just as one cannot directly perceive an illusion unless the nature of the object of the external object's meaning appears reversed, because various minds arise similar to the body, enjoyment, and place, the mind appears in various ways, and because it closely transforms like the shadow of the body, enjoyment, and place. The body, enjoyment, and place are also like this, the scripture says: "Like the body, enjoyment, and place, the mind arises in various ways." It shows the meaning of the scripture, in the conventional sense, for example, just as various minds appear in various ways to those who do not understand that the various forms of illusion are without inherent existence. To those like Devadatta who have not realized that the object of the external object's meaning is without inherent existence, the mind also appears in various ways, just like the various objects of the object, and the mind
