If so, all sentient beings would be liberated, which would be a fault. If it ultimately cannot be separated from sudden afflictions and cannot become pure, then the efforts of meditation and so on will become fruitless faults. Therefore, the Dharmadhatu, in terms of its own nature, cannot be said to be both afflicted and not afflicted. Rather, it is said to be afflicted and not afflicted depending on whether or not there is the stain of sudden afflictions. Furthermore, it is said: Affliction is neither non-affliction, that is neither pure nor impure, because the nature of mind is inherently luminous, afflictions are sudden. This shows that because the nature of mind is inherently luminous, it is not afflicted but pure. And because afflictions are sudden, it is not non-afflicted, nor is it pure. In response to this statement, the commentary here says: That is unreasonable, because those who claim self also say: If afflictions are not self, all sentient beings will be liberated. If complete purity is not self, effort will be fruitless. Therefore, for the time being, there may be no examination of self, but samsara and liberation also exist. In this way, it can be refuted, so it is said. Because in this way, those who claim self can establish that samsara and liberation exist even without the examination of self. Therefore, for the Yogacara school, it is also established that the meaning of the term Dharmadhatu is the nature of self. Therefore, the Yogacara school's statement about self is unreasonable. Therefore, the method of concealing the faults of one's own tenets cannot be established. This is because the Yogacara practitioners, regarding the examination commitment made about the meaning of the term Dharmadhatu in their own tenets, have this fault: it cannot be said to be both afflicted and not afflicted. The method of concealing this fault is this: If afflictions are not it, all sentient beings will be liberated. If complete purity is not it, effort will be fruitless.

It is neither affliction nor non-affliction, it is neither pure nor impure. Because the mind is naturally luminous, afflictions are adventitious. These unreasonable claims are untenable, because there is no object that cannot be expressed, so an object is indeed expressible. Because you say that both completely defiled and completely pure are contradictory. If it is said to be defiled, then how is it completely pure? If it is said to be completely pure, then how can it be defiled? Therefore, this is untenable. Furthermore, if it is not an affliction, then children will not be completely defiled, because it is not an affliction. If it is thought that they will be completely defiled, then it is not an affliction. Similarly, if it is said to be pure, then what will become pure because of that? Because it is already pure. If it is thought that it will become pure, then because it is not pure, this is untenable. Furthermore, just as the appearance of water and so on arises due to the power of causes and conditions, so too, conventional consciousness, relying on the arising of afflicted and non-afflicted phenomena, arising together with afflictions, and arising together with non-inverted consciousness when there are no afflictions, can become completely defiled and completely purified. Therefore, the element of phenomena does not arise together with afflictions and consciousness, so just as with water and so on, suchness cannot become completely defiled and completely purified. Therefore, the analogy of the Yogācāras: water, element, gold, and sky, are considered pure as if they were pure. This shows that it is untenable. In this way, we Madhyamikas also consider that in the conventional world, just as the appearance of water, gold, and sky and so on arises with the distinction of purity and impurity due to the power of causes and conditions, so too, conventional consciousness, relying on the arising of afflicted and non-afflicted phenomena, arising together with afflictions, can become completely defiled, and without afflictions
