Those faults that are considered to be violations of vows, if they think like this, that in the ultimate truth, name and form exist. After establishing this proposition, it points out the view of refuting the Madhyamaka school with inference. In order to show that those views of inference cannot harm the Madhyamaka school, an explanation is given here. Precisely because of this, it is said that inference cannot harm it. The Yogacharas think that because their established proposition has no reason or metaphor, inference cannot harm the Madhyamaka's vow. Because the inference established by the Yogacharas is: in the ultimate truth, name and form exist, this proposition has no reason or metaphor. If it is said that fame will cause harm, then it has already been answered. If the Yogacharas say that the Madhyamaka school vows that name and form are not born in the ultimate truth, this will be harmed by worldly fame. Then, because the conventional truth is not prohibited, fame will not cause harm, which has already been answered before. If it is said that direct perception will cause harm, then this is also irrelevant. If the Yogacharas say that the Madhyamaka school vows that name and form are not born in the ultimate truth, this will be harmed by direct perception, then this is also irrelevant. Because I do not admit that there exists an object taken by direct perception in the ultimate truth. The ultimate truth is non-dual, so what will become defiled and purified by what? The Yogacharas say that the nature of other-dependence is the nature of dependent arising of all dharmas, which is the basis of defilement and purification. This is also because the ultimate truth is non-dual, there is no transformation of defilement and purification, so the basis of those two—the nature of other-dependence—also does not exist. If there is a difference, then defilement and the purification of defilement will also exist, because in the ultimate truth, all dharmas are unborn, so

Since there is no birth, there is no affliction, and no object to be afflicted. Furthermore, in conventional truth, if there is no entity other than the mind, then there are no afflictions. If there are no afflictions, then what could be afflicted by what? The object to be cultivated and the object that cultivates arise from something that has become other. For example, the fragrance of flowers that have become other can be used to perfume sesame oil, hair, and so on. But it cannot perfume itself. Therefore, if there is no one with afflictions, how can there be purification? Here, if the Yogacara practitioners say that the Madhyamikas, who say that there is no birth in ultimate truth, do not accept affliction and purification, then they will be harmed by their own commitments and by reputation. To answer this previous view that they have brought up from their hearts, this commentary explains that saying there is no birth in ultimate truth is not to slander affliction and purification. I have refuted affliction and purification in ultimate truth, but not in conventional truth. Therefore, there is no contradiction with scripture or with the world. It is not slander, because the sutra says: 'The realm that has been with us since beginningless time is the abode of all seeds. Because it exists, all beings will attain nirvana.' Therefore, they believe that this is other-powered. If it is pure, it is called the Dharmadhatu; if it is impure, it is called afflicted. The Yogacara practitioners say that the Madhyamikas, who say that there is no birth in ultimate truth, are not not slandering affliction and purification, because the sutra says that the realm that has been with us since beginningless time is the abode of all seeds. Because it exists, all beings will be afflicted, and they will also attain nirvana and purification. If they believe that this is other-powered, then the Madhyamikas refute it, and this is the statement that they are slandering affliction and purification. That is what it is.

In response to what is called "that (referring to what was said earlier)," here, in the explanation, it is said: The reason for saying that in the Sutra is to clarify the principle of conventional truth. It is true that it is said that way in the Sutra, but its meaning is not that in the ultimate truth, the Blessed One said that the basis of all afflictions and purification is the nature of other's power. Rather, it is to connect the meanings and results of the mundane and supramundane in the conventional, thereby clarifying the principle of conventional truth, that is, "this result is for this." In order to clarify this establishment, the Blessed One said that in the Sutra. It should be understood in this way. To further explain this, saying "coexistent with beginninglessness" means that consciousness has existed since beginningless time. Here, what is called "mind, intellect, and consciousness" has existed since beginningless time, so it is called "coexistent with beginninglessness." "Element" means that it is the cause of noble Dharma, like gold and silver mines. It is the cause of the fruits of stream-enterer and so on, so it is "element." The meaning of "element" is "source," because it arises from it. "It is the place of all seeds," means that it is the place of the seeds of habits that belong to or do not belong to the three realms, are virtuous or non-virtuous. That is, that element is the place of all the seeds of habits of the mundane and supramundane, virtuous and non-virtuous. "Because of it, all transmigrate," means that relying on it, when the Dharma of obtaining transmigration manifests. That is, relying on that consciousness, when the Dharma of obtaining the five realms of transmigration manifests, all beings will be defiled by afflictions. "Will attain Nirvana," means that through the unborn wisdom arising from hearing, thinking, and meditating, one will attain Nirvana, the Dharma nature of non-arising. That is, relying on that consciousness, through the unborn arising from the three wisdoms
