It is not appropriate to be attached to the meaning and become completely afflicted, but it is appropriate to be attached to the meaning and become completely afflicted from improper attention. Therefore, Yogacharas consider the nature of the completely imputed to be non-existent in nature by the characteristic of non-existence of nature. If it is considered to be non-existent in nature, then if it is thought of and spoken of, the nature of thought and speech is completely imputed, and it is non-existent in nature by the characteristic of non-existence of nature. The nature of thought and speech is the object of other power, so if it is said that it is non-existent in nature by the characteristic of non-existence of nature, it will be a slander of the object of other power, which is not appropriate. If the meaning of these two, thought and speech, is the nature of the completely imputed, and it is non-existent in nature by the characteristic of non-existence of nature, then the nature of the completely imputed will not be established as empty, because the meaning of these two, thought and speech, is the nature of other power. For example, it is meaningless to completely impute a rope as a snake, but it is not meaningless to completely impute the snake itself as a snake, so it is not appropriate to say that it is non-existent in nature by the characteristic of non-existence of nature. It is also not appropriate to say that a completely imputed deluded mind arises without an external object, because if there is no object, then the analogy of mistaking a rope for a snake will not be established, because mistaking a rope for a snake is inverted, and even if it does not exist, the object of the rope itself is not non-existent, so it is not appropriate to say that a completely imputed deluded mind arises without an external object. Because the characteristic of the completely imputed is inverted, just as mistaking a tree stump for a person, it is also not appropriate to say that it is non-existent in nature by the characteristic of non-existence of nature, because the nature and difference, as well as names and mental discriminations, are form, mind, and mental factors, so these are like mistaking a tree stump for a person in name.

It is not without self-nature. It is also not permissible to say that one becomes completely defiled from entering into names and meanings, because from names expressing things, it is not appropriate to become attached to things and completely defiled. Because from improper attention, one becomes attached to things and completely defiled. Therefore, the way of investigation by Yogacharas is not reasonable. Here, the view of the Mahayana Madhyamikas is that the way of establishing conventional truth in name is that external and internal things are like illusions, mirages, and dreams, arising dependently on causes and conditions, and there are true and untrue statements in the way of being able to act and not being able to act. Regarding this, from improper attention, one becomes completely defiled from investigating things and non-things, etc. If one sees these as being without self-nature in the ultimate truth, one can become completely purified. Therefore, this supreme tenet should be accepted. Now, in order to show that it is unreasonable for the Yogacharas to establish "other-powered nature arising as no self-nature," that is, the self-nature of dependent arising of all phenomena, as the basis of defilement and purification, existing in both the conventional and the ultimate. Similarly, in order to investigate what other-powered nature is, the second investigation is stated, that is, through it, what other-powered nature is is shown. The so-called self-nature of dependent arising of all phenomena, which is the basis of defilement and purification, is the characteristic of other-powered nature stated by the Yogacharas. Among them, the characteristic of other-powered nature is that the self-nature of dependent arising of all phenomena is dominated and produced by other causes and conditions. That is, it is both the basis of defilement by afflictions such as desire, and the basis of purification by virtues such as non-attachment. At what time

English

When it is completely defiled by afflictions, it exists in the conventional truth; when it becomes completely purified, it exists in the ultimate truth. If the nature of other-dependence (gzhan gyi dbang gi ngo bo nyid) as a thing did not exist, then there would be no basis and no cause, and it would not become completely defiled or purified. Therefore, the nature of other-dependence is the only thing that exists. To demonstrate the validity of this, it is said: "Because of imputation with reasons, and because the two are absent otherwise, and because of the object of complete defilement, it is asserted that other-dependence truly exists." Imputation refers to things like a pot, a blanket, and the Buddha Bhagavan, which are suddenly superimposed through names, symbols, terms, and conceptualizations; this is the nature of complete imputation (kun nas brtags pa'i ngo bo nyid). It is with reasons, that is, with causes, with bases, with signs, and with manifest characteristics, so its reason is the nature of other-dependence (gzhan gyi dbang gi ngo bo nyid). Therefore, because of the cause of the four sense sources of form, taste, smell, and touch, a pot is imputed; because of the cause of threads, a blanket is imputed; and because of the qualities that cause Buddhahood, a Buddha is imputed. What is imputed as a pot, a blanket, and the Buddha Bhagavan is the nature of complete imputation in name. And what is relied upon as the cause for imputation, that is, the four sense sources, threads, and the qualities that cause Buddhahood, is the nature of other-dependence. Therefore, because the nature of complete imputation is imputed based on the cause of the nature of other-dependence, the nature of other-dependence is not non-existent. Furthermore, "because the two are absent otherwise" also demonstrates that the nature of other-dependence exists. "Otherwise" means if the nature of other-dependence did not exist. "The two are absent" means that complete defilement and complete purification would both be absent.
