Furthermore, in response to their argument, this treatise was composed here. Furthermore, if Nirvana is not real, then how is it not Nirvana? Just as assuming based on a non-existent candle, because it is dependent on assumption. It is said that this is his intention. If Nirvana is non-existent like a candle being extinguished, then it would be contingent upon assumption, for example, a candle being extinguished is non-existent, it relies on things to be assumed, similarly, Nirvana is non-existent, it also relies on things to be assumed, if so, then Nirvana contradicts the scriptures that are not contingent upon assumption. It is said that this is his intention. Why, if it is non-existent, must it be contingent upon assumption? In order to illustrate its rationality, therefore it is said: Whatever does not depend, non-existent, is not existent. Whatever non-existent thing exists without depending does not exist. Here, it can be inferred that Nirvana is not non-existent, because it is not contingent upon assumption, like a rabbit's horn. Here, if the other party says, if all Buddhists should aspire to Nirvana, then how do you deal with the two ways of things and non-things? Therefore, you will be accused of violating your commitment. In response to the rebuttal of the previous argument, this treatise was composed here. Because as stated above, ultimately, Nirvana is neither a thing nor a non-thing. Therefore, the phenomena of coming and going, whether dependent or as a cause, are neither dependent nor as a cause, Nirvana is considered to be so. The phenomena of coming and going rely on arising, or are assumed as a cause, these are not dependent on arising or assumed as a cause, this is nominally called Nirvana. Therefore, even if ultimately, Nirvana is excluded from things and non-things, there is no case of violating the commitment.

It is said: This, in conventional terms, is birth, arising from relying on and utilizing conditioned things, and being established as a cause, is samsara. And samsara itself, not relying on and utilizing, and not being established as a cause, is considered to be nirvana. Therefore, even if in ultimate truth, nirvana is defined as neither existent nor non-existent, this does not harm our promised view. Birth is coming into existence, and cessation is ceasing. The conditioned things of birth and cessation also arise from relying on certain conditions, and are established by taking certain close objects as causes, which is called samsara. For example, the collection of formations relies on certain conditions, or by taking certain close objects as causes, it arises in the cycle of the five realms, and in the manner of flowing, like the form of a wheel, it becomes birth and cessation, which is why it is samsara. If it does not rely on conditions, nor take close objects as causes, then the arising of the cycle of the five realms, and the birth and cessation in the manner of flowing, like the form of a wheel, will not occur, and this is nirvana. Therefore, the Madhyamikas acknowledge that within the scope of conventional truth, both samsara and nirvana exist, and even if in ultimate truth, nirvana is defined as neither existent nor non-existent, it will not cause harm to the promised view. Now, in order to refute the previous statement by other schools that if phenomena have inherent existence, then by abandoning afflictions and the cessation of the five aggregates, two kinds of nirvana can be attained, therefore those who assert inherent existence can attain nirvana, again it is said: Arising and destruction, and abandonment, the Buddha has taught. Arising refers to revolving in existence, and destruction refers to abandoning afflictions and the cessation of the five aggregates, attaining nirvana. Because both of these are clinging to the extremes of existence and non-existence, the Buddha taught to abandon them. Abandoning afflictions with the characteristic of inherent existence, and the cessation of the five aggregates to attain nirvana with the characteristic of inherent existence is impossible, similarly, the characteristic of non-inherent existence.

Also, there is no obtaining of nirvana, which is characterized by the absence of things due to the cessation of the aggregates, by abandoning afflictions. Thus, it was declared. In order to indicate its source, it is said in the Sutra, 'Those who seek to arise definitively from existence by arising or destruction, that is not all-knowing for them.' Thus it is said. Therefore, nirvana is: 'Neither real nor unreal, it is reasonable.' This is the conclusion, as the Bhagavan himself has refuted the two forms of nirvana. Therefore, nirvana is neither real nor unreal, and there is no harm in accepting it with reason. If it is said that arising is something to be abandoned, therefore it is unreasonable to deny reality itself, then the opponents say that arising is samsara, which is something to be abandoned, therefore it is real, and it is unreasonable to deny that reality as unreal. This is what they say. In response, the commentator says that arising is also the nature of reality, therefore there is no fault. Arising is also the real nature of samsara, therefore it is not inherently unabandonable and irrefutable, therefore there is no fault in denying that it is not real. For the time being, they have shown how to examine the unreasonableness of those who believe that nirvana is real and those who believe that nirvana is unreal. Now, the doctrine that nirvana is the nature of both real and unreal in the scriptures of the Lokayata sect will be refuted. For this, temporarily,
