Ground changes. It is said, "(If) it is not desired to be 'conditioned'." This shows that the Dharma of Nirvana is not conditioned, it is said, using the first half of the verse to show that in order to prove that Nirvana is not real, the reason for its Dharma is not conditioned. Why would it become conditioned if it were real? In order to show its rationality. It is said, "A real thing that is not conditioned, does not exist in any way." This shows the example of the dissimilar side, it is said, using the second half of the verse to show that in order to prove that Nirvana is not real, the example of the similar side is through the way that there is no real thing that is not conditioned, like a flower in the sky, not conditioned, as an example to show. In order to show its measure. Therefore, it can be inferred that Nirvana is not real, because it is not conditioned, for example, a flower in the sky, it is said. Connect these in order with the subject, the Dharma to be established, the Dharma to establish, and the example. For example, a flower in the sky is not conditioned, therefore it is not real, similarly, Nirvana is also not conditioned, therefore it is not real. Now, in order to show that if Nirvana is real, it will become dependent and established, thereby proving that it is not real. Or there is another way of arguing. If Nirvana is real, then how can Nirvana not be dependent? Because if there is no dependence and establishment, the real will not arise, it is thought, it is said. This shows that the Dharma of Nirvana is not dependent and established, it is said, using the first half of the verse to show that in order to prove that Nirvana is not real, the reason for its Dharma is not dependent and established. Why would it become dependent and established if it were real? In order to show its rationality. Therefore it is said, "There is no real thing that is not dependent, it does not exist in any way." Whatever is not dependent

It is said that there is nothing that can be relied upon. This shows that it is not an example that conforms to the Dharma. Therefore, the latter half of this verse shows that in order to prove that nirvana is not a real entity, the example that conforms to the Dharma is that there is nothing that can be relied upon, just like a rabbit's horn, showing that there is no example that can be relied upon. In order to prove this, therefore, it is inferred that nirvana is not a real entity, because it is not something that can be relied upon. For example, like a rabbit's horn. These are also related to the subject, the proposition, the reason, and the example in order. For example, a rabbit's horn is not something that can be relied upon, therefore it is not a real entity, similarly, nirvana is not something that can be relied upon, therefore it is not a real entity. Thus, for the time being, the views of those who believe that nirvana is a real entity have been analyzed unreasonably. Now, we will analyze how the views of those who believe that nirvana is not a real entity are unreasonable. Therefore, for those of the Red Robe Sect who say that nirvana is like a lamp extinguished, and for those of the Sutra School who call mere non-arising nirvana, it is said for them: If nirvana is not a real entity, then how can non-real entities be reasonable? If nirvana is not a real entity, then for non-real entities, what is analyzed by the Vaibhashikas and others, having the characteristics of ultimate good and the pacification of afflictions, how can it be reasonable? Because for non-real entities, like flowers in the sky, good and so on are unreasonable. And, because there is no inference showing that nirvana is the nature of a real entity, therefore nirvana is not a non-real entity. This is their thought. Therefore, the view of the Red Robe Sect is: Just like a lamp extinguished, it goes neither to the ground, nor to the sky, nor to any direction, nor to any corner.

Like the exhaustion of oil and the extinguishing of a lamp, the Nirvana of the Buddha is not walking on the earth, not in the sky, not going in any direction, not in any location, the exhaustion of desire is extinguished like the setting sun. They say this, thinking that Nirvana is like the extinguishing of a lamp, without substance. And the Sutra masters believe that only the cessation of afflictions and the non-arising of name and form can be established as Nirvana, and Nirvana itself is not without substance. Therefore, in order to refute them, it is explained here: If Nirvana is without substance, then for the Sarvastivadins and other schools who regard non-substance as a synonym for reality, how can the scriptures that examine Nirvana as the ultimate good, the characteristic of the pacification of afflictions, and the great bliss of liberation be explained? Because those who say that Nirvana is without substance have the fault that these scriptures are unreasonable. Because there is no inference that can prove that Nirvana is of the nature of reality, Nirvana is not without substance, this is their view. Also, as the proof stated earlier: For whom Nirvana is not real, for him non-reality does not exist. Taking the lamp as an example, the lamp is considered real in the world because it will eventually go out. Therefore, those who say that Nirvana is like the extinguishing of a lamp, the Red Robe sect, as the proof stated earlier, for their sect, Nirvana depends on reality, therefore, for them, non-reality does not exist. Taking the lamp as an example, the lamp becomes non-existent after it is extinguished, so when it is not extinguished, it is considered real in the world, it is not non-real, similarly, Nirvana is not non-real. If here, the Red Robe sect says: We take the analogy of Nirvana from the lamp, not to say that the lamp is real and Nirvana is also real, but to say that the extinguishing of the lamp is without substance and Nirvana is also without substance. Therefore, like the extinguishing of the lamp, Nirvana is without substance, thus it is established, this is the former view.
