Furthermore, to refute the views of others by saying that those things that do not have horns like those of a cow do not have them, and to expound the tenets of one's own school. These things are also, in order, the subject, the dharma to be established, the dharma that establishes, and the example of the contradictory side. Here, for those things that do not have horns like those of a cow, those that do not attain nirvana by abandoning afflictions and the cessation of name and form, they are not of self-nature; and for those aggregates that abandon afflictions and attain nirvana by the cessation of name and form, it should be known that they alone are truly of self-nature. That's what they say. In response to that statement, here the teacher says: If all this is not empty, there will be no arising and no destruction. Because for self-existence, it is necessarily abiding, and self-nature does not change, so these are unreasonable. Therefore, it is said, "Whoever from abandonment and cessation, wants to become nirvana," this is also a refutation of the distinction of the contradictory side of emptiness previously shown, but it is expressed in another way. Therefore, in this way, if your reasoning has a consequence, then what is to be established can also be established. But that is not the case, so on our side, the reasoning that speaks of self-existence is both uncommon and contradictory. Having said this, this means that for the reasoning of those who say that aggregates attain nirvana, because of abandoning afflictions and attaining nirvana by the cessation of name and form, if there is an example of consequence for that reasoning, that is, these aggregates should be known to be truly self-existent in the ultimate sense, like so-and-so, then it can also establish what is to be established, that is, the aggregates should be known to be truly self-existent. But that is not the case, so on our side, your reasoning is uncommon, so it is not established in the ultimate sense, and if it is established in the conventional sense, then it is also contradictory. This has been explained. Now to explain the opponent's reasoning.

In order to show that the meaning of attaining nirvana by abandoning afflictions and the cessation of name and form cannot be established in either of the two truths, the meaning of the reason should also be questioned: Is it said that nirvana is attained in the conventional sense, or is it attained in the ultimate sense? Thus, two types of examination were stated. Among them, in order to first show that the first type of examination is unreasonable, it is said that if it is in the conventional sense, then it is an argument for something that has already been established. In order to show that the second type of examination is unreasonable, it is said that if it is in the ultimate sense, then we, without abandonment, without attainment, without cessation, without permanence, without cessation, without arising, that is considered to be nirvana. Therefore, the reason stated as attaining nirvana by abandoning afflictions and the cessation of name and form, its meaning is not established. The meaning stated in the verses should be explained one by one. Now, for those opponents who assert that things exist inherently in the ultimate sense, with the reason of attaining nirvana by abandoning afflictions and the cessation of aggregates, among those who claim that there is attainment of nirvana, some believe that nirvana is a real entity. Some believe that nirvana is a non-real entity, in order to show that both of these situations are unreasonable because nirvana can be attained. Furthermore, for the nirvana proponents here, some say that nirvana is substantially existent, others say that it is not substantially existent, and it should be examined how both of these situations are unreasonable. Having said these, those who say that it is substantially existent are those who say that it is real, such as the Samkhya, Vaisheshika, Sarvastivada, Yogachara, and so on. Those who say that it is not substantially existent are those who say that it is non-real, such as the Kasyapiya, Sautrantika, Lokayata, and so on. Among them, first, it should be examined how the tenets of those who believe that nirvana is real are unreasonable, therefore, nirvana is not real, it will become the characteristic of aging and death.

Because there is no inference to prove that nirvana is a real entity, and if it is inferred that nirvana is a real entity, then nirvana will become something characterized by aging and death, so these were said. Therefore, nirvana is not a real entity because there is no inference to prove that it is a real entity, and if it is inferred that it is a real entity, then it will become something characterized by aging and death, so it is not a real entity, thus it was shown. If it is inferred that it is a real entity, why would it become something characterized by aging and death? Therefore, a thing without aging and death does not exist. Because if a thing does not have the characteristics of aging and death, it will not arise, that is what he meant, so it was said. Now, because a thing is characterized by aging and death, in order to show that nirvana does not have aging and death, therefore it is not a thing. This is not desirable, because nirvana is considered to be without aging and death, therefore it is possible to say so, so it was said. In order to show that inference, from the ultimate truth, nirvana is not a real entity, because it does not have aging and death. For example, like the son of a barren woman, therefore, your sect also has the problem that the meaning of the argument is not established, so it was said. Those are the subject, the dharma to be established, the dharma to be established, and the example, combined in order, for example, the son of a barren woman does not have aging and death, therefore you are not a thing, similarly, nirvana also does not have aging and death, therefore it is not a thing, therefore, for those who say it is a thing, your sect should also know that, from the ultimate truth, all conditioned phenomena only have self-nature, because by abandoning afflictions and the cessation of name and form, nirvana can be attained, the problem that the meaning of that argument is not established also exists. Now, if nirvana becomes a real entity, then it will become a conditioned phenomenon, in order to show that it is established that it is not a real entity, or there are other ways to refute, for those who say that nirvana is a real entity, if nirvana is a real entity, then nirvana is a conditioned phenomenon.
