Yes. It is not unborn, nor is it existent, nor is it nonexistent, not permanent, nor impermanent, not empty, nor not empty. Therefore, in the Perfection of Wisdom, it is said: When meditating on the Middle Way, one should not completely fixate on "the eye is truly existent," nor should one completely fixate on "the eye is not truly existent," and so on. In the Holy *Ratnakuta Sutra*, it is said: "O Kasyapa, to say 'it exists' is one extreme; to say 'it does not exist' is the second extreme. That which is between these two extremes is without form, invisible, unimpeded, non-abiding, non-manifesting, non-discriminating consciousness, and without a location." These are established. It is said that "the path is a synonym for knowing the means of attainment." That which is called dependent arising, which is emptiness, and upon which something is designated, that itself is the Middle Way. In conventional terms, it is also said: "That which arises in dependence on something, that is temporarily not that itself, nor is it different from that; therefore, it is neither annihilation nor permanence." In this way, it is the Middle Way. In ultimate truth, it is also said: "Not known from others, it is peaceful; all elaborations are ceased; without conceptualization, meaning is not different; that itself is the characteristic of suchness." In this way, it is the Middle Way. If someone were to say this: "By the power of individually determined causes and conditions, whatever is dependently arisen is said to be emptiness; that is designated in dependence, and that itself is the Middle Way." This means that the nature of a thing that arises from what has not previously arisen is the very essence of the thing. That, like a rabbit's horn, is neither existent nor nonexistent. Whatever arises from its own nature is the Middle Way because it abandons the two extremes. If one thinks in this way, this is the thought of those of other schools who believe that the meaning of this *Compendium of Meanings* composed by the teacher is not that things are without inherent existence, but that they arise from what has not previously arisen, and should not be spoken of as the two extremes, and therefore it is also emptiness. And since what arises from its own nature also exists, therefore that which has inherent existence is the Middle Way; such is the thought being considered.

In order to refute that, the explanation is done here. Like this, emptiness will not be established, because this verse is for washing away the stains of conceptualization. If you argue because you are stained by the mire of the stains of conceptualization, then it depends on the argument. Just like putting a jewel on the head as an ornament on the feet, although it will not be blamed, the wise will ridicule such an inappropriate way of wearing it. Similarly, your saying that will not harm this verse, but the purpose you want to achieve will not be achieved. Because if intrinsic nature does not exist, then dependent arising will not be established. Therefore, after saying this, because dependent arising does not correspond to intrinsic nature, it is taught not to distort the meaning of this verse composed by the teacher. To illustrate this, it is said: Because there are no non-dependently arisen things, there are no non-empty things. Dependent arising is like an illusionary person, because there is no intrinsic nature. Understand it this way. All phenomena, internal and external, mundane and supramundane, have no intrinsic nature, because they are dependently arisen, just like an illusionary person. Understand it this way. If someone says that for things like space that are not dependently arisen, because there is no dependent arising, there is the fault of the reason not being established on one side of the subject, then the opponent will say that the Madhyamikas say: Because there are no non-dependently arisen things, there are no non-empty things. Thus, dependent arising is like an illusionary person, because there is no intrinsic nature. The stated reason, "dependent arising," is not pervasive, because here space and so on are not dependently arisen.
