In this twenty-second section, regarding the observation made in this chapter, considering the result of valid cognition as the primary content of this chapter, the Sautrāntikas and Vaibhāṣikas believe that, from the perspective of ultimate truth, phenomena such as form are inherently existent. Because they are entities, like the body of the Tathāgata. However, the example given, that the Tathāgata himself is said to be without inherent existence, indicates the Dharmakāya of the Tathāgata. Thus, the aggregates, elements, sense bases, characteristics, the basis of characteristics, cause and effect, things and non-things, oneness and otherness, and so on, all the aspects that are thoroughly examined, none of these exist in the Dharmakāya. Therefore, by completely abandoning these, the Dharmakāya of the Tathāgata is established. As it is said in the chapter taught by the venerable Truthful One, "Venerable Śāradvatīputra, seeing form is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing up to the consciousness aggregate is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing the earth element is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing up to the wind element is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing self is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing sentient beings, life, nourishment, individuals, persons, that is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing the grasping of 'I' is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing the grasping of 'mine' is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing signs is not seeing the Tathāgata. Venerable Śāradvatīputra, not seeing signs is seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing without attachment is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing non-things is not seeing the Tathāgata. Seeing the true limit is not seeing the Tathāgata." As it is said. Therefore, "Not body, not other than body, there is no body, there is no that, the Tathāgata is not with body, what is the Tathāgata?" and so on, with these and others, the Tathāgata is refuted.

Indeed. The Dharmakaya of the Tathagata, the ultimate truth, and the Rupakaya, the conventional truth, are said to be unattainable because of the meaning of the manifestation of emptiness in the ultimate truth. In order to explain the merits of the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata, and to eliminate the statement that others can only accomplish it with dry speculative treatises, here we must also establish a reliable source of teachings. Therefore, in the "Lankavatara Sutra," it says: "Great Wisdom, not permanent, not impermanent, not fruit, not cause, not conditioned, not unconditioned, not wisdom, not knowable, not the basis of self-nature, not self-nature, not aggregates, not different from aggregates, not speech, not what is spoken, not one, not different, not related to both, whatever is unattainable is beyond all elaboration. Whatever is beyond all elaboration is the Tathagata." Thus, the meaning of what is said is established. Similarly, in the "Sacred Sutra of the Revelation of the Secret of the Tathagata," with the phrase "Peaceful Wisdom, the body of the Tathagata is," etc., it proclaims the nine characteristics of the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata, the five characteristics of the Rupakaya, one characteristic of the Holy Word, four characteristics of the two bodies, and six other characteristics of the Dharmakaya. Among them, in the nine characteristics of the Dharmakaya, the so-called body of space refers to the fact that there is no obstruction to the power of wisdom in relation to what is knowable. Just as space pervades all things, so too does the wisdom arising from the cause of the Dharmakaya pervade all that is knowable. The so-called unequal and equal body refers to equality with the bodies of all Tathagatas. Because the qualities of the Tathagata are not present in non-Tathagatas, the Tathagatas who are unequal to them are taken as examples to approach others.

It shows equality with the Tathagatas who are equal. For example, in the definition of poetics, there is no other aspect that matches it, and it is exemplified by itself, such as: the battle between the son of Sound and the son of Delight is like the battle between the son of Sound and the son of Delight. Or, the Dharmakaya of the Tathagata Amitabha and others is not equal to other beings, but here it is equal, so it is unequal and equal. Or, the unequal are those who benefit and harm, those who are attached to them and those who are angry. Because they are equal to this body, they are unequal and equal. Or, the definition of the object of focus is mutually equal to other definitions of the object of focus, but focusing on emptiness is not equal to them. Because of this inequality, the body that becomes equal is unequal and equal. The so-called "body that surpasses all worlds" shows that the quality itself is the most supreme. Whoever's quality is the most supreme and surpasses, that is called surpassing in the world. The so-called "body that all sentient beings follow" shows that all sentient beings are the essence of the Tathagata. Thus, the definition of the Dharmakaya, emptiness, is because it follows all sentient beings. The so-called "body without comparison" shows that there is nothing more superior than the qualities. Thus, the superior in qualities is used as a comparison, not the inferior. For example, it is said, "The face of a girl is like the moon." The so-called "body without similarity" shows that its qualities are not possessed by others. Thus, those with equal qualities are called similar. The so-called "extremely pure body" shows that there is no grasping discrimination. Thus, whoever does not have the discrimination of ego-grasping is considered extremely pure. The so-called "stainless body" shows that there is no object-grasping discrimination. Thus, whoever does not have the discrimination of self-grasping and does not focus on external objects is considered stainless. The body that is not afflicted by all afflictions.
