Because in eliminating others, it does not have such a thought, so it is not truly existent as a substance. Similarly, for others that are not eliminated by consciousness, it also does not have such a thought, so it is also not truly existent as a substance. Others say: A pot, in the ultimate sense, is existent as a substance, because it is knowable, like form. Because it is to be known, that thing to be known is the same as to be understood. This is because here, following the final phrase of grammar of the Abhidharma school, the Madhyamika refutes, saying that because it is not existent as a substance, like a pot. This example is criticized as being empty of its own nature, and it is a statement showing the inference that proves the pot is existent as a substance. These are, in order: the subject, the object to be proven, the reason, the example, and the pervasion. For example, form is knowable, therefore it is existent as a substance. Similarly, a pot is also knowable, therefore it is existent as a substance. If one uses 'being knowable' as the reason, how does one prove that it is existent as a substance? Its pervasion is: because it is to be known, that thing to be known is the meaning of 'to be understood,' and therefore it is a substance. To show that source, it is said: From the definition, the root of the word 'to be known' means 'to be understood.' From the grammatical definition, the root of the word 'to be known' means 'to be understood.' Here, 'to be known' is the meaning of 'to be understood,' and that is a substance, therefore, with the reason 'because it is knowable,' it can be proven that it is existent as a substance. Therefore, form and pot, because they are knowable, are established as existent as a substance. To show that conclusion, it is said: Pots and so on are also established as existent as a substance, so there is no basis for existing conventionally like a pot and water. Thus, the final phrase of grammar establishes that pots and form are existent as a substance, so Abhidharma.

In the characteristics of the Sautrāntika school, it says, "Whatever eliminates other phenomena with a mind, that mind does not exist, like a pot of water. This is conventionally existent." Saying this, here it is temporarily not taken as a source. The answer to saying this is that explaining it here is not good either, because the existence of form as a substance in the ultimate sense has not been established, so there is no example. Saying this, the opponents, having entered the seal of the grammarians, arbitrarily state their own arguments, but as far as our side is concerned, the existence of form as a substance in the ultimate sense has not been established, so the example of the opponents saying "like form" does not exist, therefore the pot has not been established as a substance either. Therefore, for us, in the characteristics of the Sautrāntika school, it says, "Whatever eliminates other phenomena with a mind, that mind does not exist, like a pot of water. This is conventionally existent." Such a source is not non-existent either. Now, in this way, the principle of the Sautrāntika school of the ultimate truth has been established, but we also acknowledge the principle of the Sautrāntika school of the conventional truth, so in order to show this, listen, you who are not proficient in the Sautrāntika school. In name, just as the characteristics say, all phenomena are nominally existent, but whatever phenomenon, its mind does not perish, that is substantially existent; whatever phenomenon perishes, its mind does not exist, that is nominally existent, and thus it is established. In name, just as the characteristics of the Sautrāntika school say, "Whatever eliminates other phenomena with a mind, that mind does not exist, like a pot of water. This is conventionally existent." All phenomena are nominally existent, but to distinguish this, whatever phenomenon such as a pot, its mind of the shard etc. does not perish, that shard etc. is substantially existent; whatever phenomenon such as a pot perishes, the mind of the pot etc. does not exist, that which is perished is nominally existent, and thus it is established, therefore in convention it is not contradictory to the characteristics of the Sautrāntika school. Non-existence is also knowable in the form of non-existence, but it is not substantially existent, so it is also uncertain. Saying this is because the opponents, with the reason of "being knowable"
