Just as if something does not exist, there will be no thought about it, like a vase; if other things are excluded by consciousness, there will be no thought about it, like water. These are not existent in the conventional truth. What exists in the ultimate truth is a meaning different from these. What exists in the conventional truth is called nominally existent, and what exists in the ultimate truth is called substantially existent. So, if something does not exist, there will be no thought about it, like a vase, what is the definition of this conventionally existent? If no thought about that thing arises for something, for example, when a vase is broken, no thought about that vase arises, nor does any other thought arise, this is called conventionally existent, that is, nominally existent. What is the definition of conventionally existent, like water, where there is no thought about it when other things are excluded by consciousness? What is the definition of that thing when other things are sought by consciousness? If something does not exist, and no thought arises, for example, water taken from the ocean or a bucket, neither the thought of the ocean nor the bucket arises, nor does any other thought arise, this is also called conventionally existent, that is, nominally existent. What is the definition of what is called existent in the ultimate truth is a meaning different from these? If something exists, even if excluded by consciousness, a thought different from it will arise, for example, even if the vase is broken, a thought of a tile different from it will arise; also, like water taken from the ocean or a bucket, even if the ocean and the bucket are excluded by consciousness, a thought about water will arise, this is called existent in the ultimate truth, that is, substantially existent. Therefore, you Madhyamikas say that because it is not substantially existent, it is like a vase. If for the time being we negate substantially existent through the definition of Dharmakirti, then it will not harm us. Why? Because, just as when a vase is broken, or when other things are excluded by consciousness, no thought arises about these things themselves, so these things are ultimately nominally existent in the conventional truth. However, when a vase is broken, or when other things are excluded by consciousness, for things different from these, such as tiles and water, there will be thoughts about these things, so these things are substantially existent in the ultimate truth. Therefore, how tiles and water are substantially existent in the ultimate truth, the vase is not

And those oceans and ponds that have not been abandoned, because they are truly existent in the ultimate sense, therefore your reason and example of saying "because it is not truly existent, like a vase" are not established, so in the ultimate sense the vase is also truly existent. The Tathagata is truly existent, they say. In order to answer their saying this, the explanation here says that it is not good, because existence in reality is harmed by its own characteristics. This is because in the past, the opponents, from the characteristics of Dharma, what is without its consciousness, like a vase, and what eliminates others with consciousness, without its consciousness, like water, that is conventionally existent. What is destroyed and abandoned, but will produce a different consciousness from it, for example, a vase is destroyed, and a different consciousness of tile will arise, and the water taken from the ocean or pond, although the ocean and pond are abandoned with consciousness, but for those who will produce other water consciousness, that is truly existent. Therefore, you Madhyamikas say, "Because it is not truly existent, like a vase," if for the time being we use the nature of our Dharma characteristics to prevent true existence, then it will not harm us. Why? Because, like this, when the vase is destroyed and others are eliminated with consciousness, for those who do not produce their own consciousness, even if those are established as existing in the conventional, but from those who are destroyed by the vase and abandoned with consciousness, for tiles and water, their consciousness will arise, so those are truly existent in the ultimate sense. Therefore, just as tiles and water are truly existent in the ultimate sense, the vase that has not been destroyed and those oceans and ponds that have not been abandoned are also not truly existent in the ultimate sense, saying that just as tiles and water are truly existent in the ultimate sense, the vase that has not been destroyed and those oceans and ponds that have not been abandoned are also truly existent in the ultimate sense, for the true existence of such a vow, from the nature of Dharma characteristics, what is without its consciousness, like a vase, and what eliminates others with consciousness, without its consciousness, like water, that is established as existing in the conventional.
