Just as there is inherent existence, so too are forms and other phenomena real, therefore, they say that in ultimate reality only inherent existence exists. In order to refute the distinctions that are contrary to emptiness, thereby showing that the two bodies of the Tathagata are without inherent existence in ultimate reality, that is why it is said. In order to answer what they have said, by way of explanation, it is stated here: If the wisdom belonging to conventional truth considers phenomena and the Tathagata to have inherent existence, then it is merely establishing what is already established. However, in ultimate reality, first the Tathagata himself should be examined. They say that if the opponents, with the wisdom belonging to conventional truth, consider forms and other phenomena and the two bodies of the Tathagata to have inherent existence, then we Madhyamikas also acknowledge from the scriptures: "Form is like a bubble, feeling is like a water bubble, perception is like a mirage, formations are like a plantain tree, consciousness is like an illusion, so said the Kinsman of the Sun (Buddha)." and "South of the Snow Mountains, near the banks of the Ganges River, at the abode of the sage Kapila, the son of King Suddhodana of the Shakya clan, named Sarvarthasiddha, if he does not renounce his household and go forth, he will become a universal monarch ruling over the four continents, possessing the seven precious things. If he renounces his household and goes forth, he will become the unsurpassed, perfectly enlightened Buddha, benefiting many beings, giving happiness to many beings, and becoming the teacher of gods and humans." Since you have already acknowledged these, then these are also established for our side, therefore your establishment becomes merely establishing what is already established, which is unreasonable. However, if in ultimate reality it is considered that these have inherent existence, then it is not established. Therefore, first you should examine the Tathagata himself, as an example. Here it is shown that the opponents want to proceed according to the later examination, in order to refute this, because the wisdom here also belongs to the category of aggregates, it is the nature of aggregates.

Because the Tathagata is obstructed, that (Tathagata) is also obstructed, therefore it is said "not the body" and so on. The Dharmakaya of the Tathagata, the ultimate truth, is the wisdom called the path of liberation, also because it belongs to the category of aggregates indicated by the marks and signs of the Rupakaya, the conventional truth. Obstructing the Tathagata, the conventional truth of the Rupakaya, which is the nature of the aggregates, as being without self-nature in the ultimate truth, then the wisdom of the Dharmakaya, the ultimate truth, is also obstructed as being without self-nature in the ultimate truth, therefore, the author of the treatise says: Not the body, not different from the body, in that there is no body, in that there is no that, the Tathagata is not with a body, what is the Tathagata? Thus, this first verse is spoken. Among them, "the meaning of the body is the meaning of the aggregates" means that the meaning of the body of the Tathagata is the meaning of the five aggregates. In the Abhidharma, it is said that the meaning of aggregates is the meaning of accumulation, so the nature of the five aggregates is the summary of these five: form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. If you ask what the five aggregates are not? "Is the Tathagata" means that it explains the "not the body" said in the verse, if you ask what exactly is the meaning of the body, the five aggregates? It is not the Tathagata, not the Tathagata who is the nature of the Rupakaya and the Dharmakaya. The word Tathagata should be spoken separately, which means the word Tathagata, not the body, not different from the body, in that there is no body, in that there is no that, the Tathagata is not with the five aggregates, what is the Tathagata? In all these cases, the aggregates are not the Tathagata, the Tathagata is not different from the aggregates, the Tathagata does not have aggregates, the aggregates do not have the Tathagata, the Tathagata is not with the aggregates, therefore what is the Tathagata in the ultimate truth, it explains that it should be spoken separately. Why should it be spoken separately like that?

Therefore, it is said, "In order to clarify the meaning of the words." If the word "Tathagata" is not mentioned, and only "not the aggregates," "not other than the aggregates," etc. are said, then it will not appear that this is the meaning of the words negating the Tathagata, but only that it will be understood as the meaning of the words negating the aggregates. Because the meaning of this verse is to clarify the meaning of the words negating the Tathagata, it is shown that the word "Tathagata" should be spoken separately. Therefore, here are shown five commitments: the aggregates are the Tathagata; the Tathagata is not other than the aggregates; the Tathagata does not have the aggregates; the aggregates do not have the Tathagata; the Tathagata does not possess the aggregates. In order to first show the first commitment, it is said, "The aggregates are not the Tathagata" is a synonym for "not the nature of the Tathagata," which is the statement of the commitment. This is the subject (paksha). The dharma of the aggregates is the aggregates themselves, the nature of arising and ceasing, the nature of being conditioned, etc. This is the reason (hetu), which indicates that these are the dharma-reasons for proving that the aggregates are not the Tathagata. This is not the dharma of the subject. The example is, due to this, the aggregates of ordinary beings, etc. This shows that the example proving that the aggregates are not the Tathagata is the subject and the dharma of the subject, due to which, the dharma that is recognized by both the proponent and the opponent, i.e., the aggregates of ordinary beings, etc. This is an example of a similar class. Having thus stated the subject, the dharma of the subject, and the example, now, in order to show the inference, here the inference is: in reality, the aggregates are not the Tathagata, because they are the aggregates themselves, because they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. For example, the aggregates of ordinary beings, or...
