The syllable "de" (དེ་,seed syllable) here also has the meaning of a vow, the meaning of a cause, and should be regarded as the meaning combined with what comes from the text below. The meaning of the word is the same as before. Among them, from the perspective of the meaning of the cause of entering into a vow, now it is said, "Similarly, by refuting the distinctions of the opposite of emptiness," because the author of the treatise made a vow that all things are unborn when he began to write the first chapter of the "Examination of Conditions." Therefore, here too, the author of the treatise speaks in this way from the perspective of the meaning of the cause of entering into what was vowed. The so-called "similarly" is in the manner previously stated. Emptiness is one's own tenet. Its opposite is the tenet of the opponent who refutes, for example, claiming that things have self-nature in the ultimate sense. The so-called "its distinction" refers to the distinctions of the opponent's tenet put forward to prove that things have self-nature in the ultimate sense, such as what is said below, "In the ultimate sense, time exists, because it is the cause of arising and ceasing," and so on. The so-called "refuting it" means that from the perspective of refuting it, the twenty-first chapter is begun to be written. From the perspective of the meaning combined with what comes from the text below, it is to write the twenty-first chapter by means of showing that arising and ceasing have no self-nature. It is said in this way because the meaning of what is said in the text below of the twenty-first chapter, "Examination of Arising and Ceasing," is to show that arising and ceasing have no self-nature, so it is said from this perspective. What is the result of this chapter? By what means is that result obtained? Showing that arising and ceasing have no self-nature is the result of this chapter, and that result is obtained by means of refuting the distinctions of the opposite of emptiness. Therefore, the commentator, when connecting this chapter, only shows the method and the first result arising from the method, that is, mentions "the distinctions of the opposite of emptiness."

For the sake of the doctrine, it is stated here: In the ultimate truth, time is truly existent, because it is the cause of arising and ceasing. Whatever does not exist is not the cause of arising and ceasing, like the foot of a snake. Time is the cause of those that follow after the time of arising and ceasing, therefore, in the ultimate truth, time is truly existent, therefore, it has manifestation, because the proof is established, so the desired meaning is accomplished. Thus stated, the subject of those, the dharma to be proven, the dharma that proves, the example of the dissimilar side, the connection of proximity, and the conclusion are connected in order. Here, like the foot of a snake, whatever does not exist is not the cause of arising and ceasing following after time, therefore it is non-existent. Time is the cause of things arising and ceasing following after time, therefore, it is truly existent. Thus, time is truly existent, because in the ultimate truth, the nature of things is able to manifest the three times. Previously, in the first distinction of the examination of time, we said that in the ultimate truth, the nature of things is truly existent, because it is the cause of manifestation, like a lamp. In the first distinction of the examination of cause and effect, it was said that in the ultimate truth, time should be known as truly existent, because it is the cause of the accomplishment of the result. Thus stated, the proof is established, so our desired meaning is accomplished. In order to refute the difference of the dissimilar side of emptiness, thereby showing that the nature of arising and ceasing is empty, so those words were spoken. To this, the commentator says here: Arising and ceasing, whichever does not exist, or do they accomplish simultaneously? Thus stated. Here, why do you prove arising and ceasing by time, and prove the existence of time by the existence of arising and ceasing? Therefore, if arising and ceasing are established, then will their cause, time, also be established? Arising and ceas
