Since that (la na) is without inherent nature, the result is the nature of emptiness. Even if it arises, it is without the nature of other things. When refuting this statement, "How can emptiness arise? How can emptiness cease? That emptiness should also be unceasing, and should also be unborn," etc. From the ultimate point of view, emptiness cannot arise, because it is non-existent, like a flower in the sky. From the ultimate point of view, there is no non-result thing in the nature of the result, so it cannot cease, because there is no non-result thing, like disappearing from a non-result thing. Or, inferring from the nature of non-existence, because the birth and cessation of the result of non-birth and non-cessation are cut off, there is a fault of imposing a characteristic on the subject in the proposition. As stated before, these will also appear here. Here, if others say, like this, the reason and the fault of the proposition that the existence and non-existence of the result are not caused by the cause, have been explained before when refuting the Vaibhashikas and the Lokayatas, then why repeat it here? In order to answer this previous view raised from them, the explanation is made here. Previously, "The non-empty result will not arise, the non-empty will not cease. The non-empty result will not cease, nor will it be unborn." "How can emptiness arise? How can emptiness cease? That emptiness should also be unceasing, and should also become unborn." These are to show the non-inherent nature of the cause from the perspective of the result. Now, it is to show the non-inherent nature from the thing of the cause, the difference is here. The situation of the previous two verses was to refute the Vaibhashikas who said that the result is not empty of the nature of the result even before the result arises. For those who exist without being empty of the nature of the result even before the result arises, there will be a fault of no birth and cessation, so they do not admit it, because the thing of the result is the nature of having birth and cessation.

Because it is a different entity, it is without inherent existence. Thus, through the lack of inherent existence of the effect, the cause is also without inherent existence. Therefore, from the ultimate point of view, the cause does not produce the effect. Those Lokayatas (materialists) say that before the effect arises, it is of the nature of non-existence, so the effect is of the nature of emptiness. Even if it arises, it is without the inherent existence of other things. To refute these views, for emptiness that is previously non-existent and mutually non-existent, there will be the fault of having no birth and cessation, so they do not want birth and cessation without a cause. The entity of the effect arises from the cause and is of the nature of ceasing on its own, so it is not without inherent existence. Thus, through the effect not being without inherent existence, the cause is also not without inherent existence. Therefore, from the ultimate point of view, non-inherent existence will not arise and cease without a cause. Now, what is said here is that because the cause is without inherent existence, from the ultimate point of view, the cause does not produce an existing effect. The cause itself is not without inherent existence, so from the ultimate point of view, non-inherent existence will not arise without a cause. The difference lies in this, so it will not be a repetition. Therefore, if one examines it in this way, from the ultimate point of view, it is unreasonable for the cause to produce the effect, therefore, if birth does not exist, the cause itself will not be reasonable. It is said in this way, just as it was explained before. For this, from the ultimate point of view, the cause produces the effect, because it is the cause of the effect. That reason that was stated, from the ultimate point of view, is unestablished. If it is said to be a conventional reason, then it is contradictory in meaning, because it exists only in the dissimilar side. This is the conclusion and the fruit of valid cognition (pramāṇa). Thus, from the ultimate point of view, it is unreasonable for the cause to produce the effect, because birth does not exist, so the cause itself is unreasonable. Therefore, the reason previously stated by others, from the ultimate point of view, the cause produces the effect, because it is the cause of the effect, from the ultimate point of view, is unestablished.
