Then, it would lead to a theory that effects arise from what did not previously exist. The words of those who say that effects exist in causes, but are imperceptible because they are overwhelmed and minute, are also unreasonable because it is difficult to prove that effects exist in causes as overwhelmed and minute. Therefore, by saying that in the theory of Samkhya, the collection of seeds, etc., itself is called an effect, such as sprouts, etc., even though they previously existed in a potential form, just as the rays of the sun overwhelm the light of planets, stars, and constellations, even though they are invisible, they are not non-existent; just as smoke, dust, and fog, etc., float in the sky, even though they are invisible, they are not non-existent. The words of those who say this are also shown to be unreasonable because it is difficult to prove through any inference that effects previously existed in causes in a potential form as overwhelmed and minute. Those Samkhyas who say that the meaning of 'effects previously exist' is that they are not non-existent before arising, but the essence of the effect is not manifest, and that is what arises. Refuting these views should also be elaborated as before. Therefore, by saying that in the theory of those who say that potentiality manifests in Samkhya, the meaning of 'effects previously exist in causes' is that before arising, in the unarisen time, just as sesame oil previously exists in sesame seeds, effects previously exist in causes in a potential form, and the meaning of 'arising' is that just as the essence of sesame oil was not previously manifest, but later arises as a manifest essence through conditions such as pounding and squeezing, the essence of effects, such as sprouts, etc., was not previously manifest, but later also arises as a manifest essence through conditions such as cultivation and growth, so effects previously exist in causes in a potential form, and later arise as a manifest essence through conditions. Refuting these views should also be elaborated as before, because it is impossible to prove that effects previously exist in causes in a potential form, so the assertion that effects previously exist is not established, and because manifestation arises from what did not previously appear, the

It should be combined with the accomplished one who asserts that the fruit exists before the cause. Here, the author composes the treatise in order to refute the views of his own school. Similarly, in order to refute those who assert that the fruit exists before the cause, he also says "explanation" and so on. This shows that the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas believe that the fruit arises from the collection of causes before the cause, which is another refutation of their views. In order to illustrate this, it is said, "If there is no fruit in the collection of causes and conditions." This shows that the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas add their view that the fruit arises from the cause before the cause. Since the tenets of the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas hold that the fruit exists in the cause before the fruit, and then the fruit arises by the power of conditions, according to their view, the collection of causes itself should arise from the fruit that exists before the fruit. Now, in order to show that this is unreasonable, it is said, "Causes and conditions will be the same as non-causes and non-conditions, because the fruit is empty." Furthermore, in this world, the reason why there are terms such as cause and condition is because causes and conditions exist in an interdependent manner, such as "because this exists, that exists; because this arises, that arises," the cause is not empty of the fruit, and the fruit is produced by the cause. If, as the opponents believe, the collection of causes and conditions itself has no fruit, then the causes and conditions, because they are empty of the fruit, would fall into the same fault as the non-causes and non-conditions posited by those of different kinds or nihilists, so this is not reasonable. Therefore, now we will explain what the characteristics of causes and conditions are, and what the difference is between the characteristics of causes and non-causes. First, in order to explain the difference between the characteristics of causes and conditions, it is said, "If there is any difference between causes and conditions." First, the characteristic of a cause is that it only produces that, and does not produce others.
