The term "also" refers to those Vaibhashikas and others who believe that time is only established in dependence on things, that is, it exists, abides, and changes in dependence on things such as moments, days, and months. They believe that the three times, past, present, and future, can be established, and this is to refute their tenets. To those who say this, it should be said: If no things exist, how can time exist? It means that there is no time other than things. This is because things such as moments, days, and months do not exist at all in the ultimate sense, so there is no time other than things, so how can time established in dependence on things exist? This is to explain this point. Those who assert that time exists say: Time is truly existent, because it is the cause of the arising of special expressions. Because here, whatever does not exist is not considered to be the cause of the arising of special expressions, such as a rabbit's horn. Time is the cause of the arising of special expressions such as weaving, is weaving, and will be weaving, so time is truly existent. Those who assert that time exists use the reason that time is the act of weaving, etc., to prove that time is truly existent. They combine the subject, the property to be proven, the proving property, the dissimilar example, the application, and the conclusion in order. For example, a thing that does not exist like a rabbit's horn is not the cause of the arising of special expressions, so it does not exist. But time is the cause of the arising of special expressions such as weaving, so they say that time is truly existent. To this statement, the commentator here says: This statement is not good, because special expressions such as weaving are characteristics of conditioned dharmas, so the reason is not established.

The entry of specific expressions that gather is the dharma of compounded things such as sab ma, but because it is not time, the opponent's reason is not established. It is also contradictory in meaning, because the very cause of entering specific expressions is conventional truth. This shows that the opponent's reason is contradictory in meaning. The very cause of entering specific expressions is not conventional truth, for if it is proven to be conventional truth, it contradicts the assertion that time exists ultimately. Therefore, since time is not established in any way, the reason that "because it is the cause of eliminating it" is not established. This is the root conclusion of the reason. Thus, since time, dependent and independent, etc., are not established in any way, the root meaning of the reason previously stated by the opponents, "In ultimate truth, the nature of things exists, because it is the cause of manifestation, like a lamp," is not established. Thus, since time itself is not established, the nature of things is not the cause of manifesting that time, and therefore it is established that the nature of things does not exist in ultimate truth. Here, the meaning of the refutation is that by refuting the faults of the proposition first stated by the opponent, and by showing that one's own proposition is without fault, the distinction of the non-concordant aspect of emptiness is refuted, thereby showing that time is without self-nature. This is both the conclusion and the result of valid cognition (pramāṇa). In this section of the nineteenth refutation of the examination of time, viewing the meaning of the refutation as the result of valid cognition is because of the faults of the proposition first stated by the opponent in this refutation, such as "In ultimate truth, the nature of things exists, because it is the cause of manifestation, like a lamp," and because the author of the treatise showed that his own unreasonable proposition of time is without fault, thereby refuting the distinction of the non-concordant aspect of emptiness, thereby showing that time is without self-nature. Time is without self-nature.
