If it is said that this is directed towards birth, but because it is like tethering a horse, and the refutation and examination are the same, the faults mentioned earlier cannot be avoided. This is like, if someone asks, "Whose is this tethered horse?" and answers, "Whose is this horse?" Or asks, "Whose is this horse?" and answers, "Whose is this tethered horse?" In this way, neither answer clearly indicates the object, so the meaning cannot be conveyed. Similarly, if someone asks, "What is being born?" and answers, "It is directed towards birth." Or asks, "What is directed towards birth?" and answers, "It is being born." In this way, neither answer clearly indicates the object, so the meaning cannot be conveyed. Furthermore, what is called "directed towards birth," is it already born, unborn, bound, or unbound? In this way, the refutation and examination are the same as before, so the opponent's argument cannot be established, and the previous faults cannot be avoided. If it is said that relying on the previous moment of mind, one can realize the liberation of the non-learning mind, that is, if the opponent argues that because the continuum is not different, relying on the previous moment of defiled mind, the subsequent moment of non-learning mind is liberated, therefore liberation is reasonable. This is their argument. The answer to this is: This is also unreasonable, because bondage and liberation are merely conventional designations, therefore the desired meaning is lost. That is, in conventional truth, what is established by reliance is merely conventional truth, therefore your desired ultimate truth of liberation is unreasonable. Therefore, the ultimate truth of liberation is unreasonable, because of the existence of an antidote, the meaning of this argument is not established, and like liberation, the antidote of realization is not realized, therefore there is no example, and there is the fault of the proposition lacking an example. This is the conclusion. Here it is said: The ultimate truth of liberation exists, because for those who desire it, there is aspiration. Here, for things that do not exist in ultimate truth, there is no aspiration for those who desire them, such as the jewel on the head of a water dragon. Desiring liberation

For those, how wonderful it would be if I, like a fire with exhausted fuel, would pass into nirvana without clinging! How wonderful it would be if nirvana were mine! Because there is such a wish, it is said that ultimate liberation certainly exists. This is the statement of the opponent proving the existence of liberation with the reason that there is a wish to cling to self and what belongs to self. Those are the subject, the dharma to be proven, the proving dharma, the dissimilar example, and the connection and conclusion to be connected in order. For example, for something that does not exist, like a jewel on the head of a water snake, those who desire it do not have the wish to cling to self and what belongs to self, so it does not exist. But for those who have liberation, those who desire it think: May I pass into nirvana! May nirvana be mine! Because there is the wish to cling to self and what belongs to self, it is said that ultimate liberation certainly exists. In response to their saying that, the commentator himself explains here: "May I pass into nirvana without clinging, may nirvana be mine!" Those who cling, their clinging is not well grasped. Those who desire liberation, if they engage in clinging to self and what belongs to self, that is not well grasped, their clinging is not well grasped. Because holding and abiding in the manner of clinging to self and what belongs to self, this is an obstacle to liberation. That is what is intended. Therefore, their wish in the manner of clinging to self and what belongs to self, that is clinging, so it is not well grasped, therefore they do not have liberation. That is what is intended. Or, thinking that the nature of non-clinging is clinging, this is because a reversed cognition arises towards that object, so clinging is not well grasped. This is saying that nirvana is the nature of non-clinging, those who desire it, if they cling to self and what belongs to self, this is because a reversed cognition arises towards the object of nirvana, so their clinging is not well grasped. That is what is shown. Or, regarding clinging
