The remaining lower half should be placed after "it is said." If birth is conditioned, then it will have three characteristics. Having three characteristics means that those three characteristics will gather together, just like liquor with three ingredients. If it is said that birth itself, which is shown as a characteristic of conditioned things, is conditioned, then it will also have three characteristics, which means that those three characteristics will gather together, for example, a collection of grass liquor with three ingredients, just like the three ingredients gather together. Therefore, in order to illustrate this, in reality, birth and so on, which are conditioned things themselves, are not considered to be characteristics of conditioned things, because they are conditioned, just like the basis of a characteristic. These are respectively: the subject, the property to be established, the establishing property, and the example, arranged in order. For example, the basis of a characteristic is conditioned, therefore it is not considered to be a characteristic of conditioned things, similarly, birth and so on, if they are also conditioned, then because they are conditioned, they are not considered to be characteristics of conditioned things. If it is said that the basis of a characteristic is also a characteristic that can indicate the basis of other characteristics, therefore it is uncertain, then this is the opponent raising an objection to the Madhyamika's example "just like the basis of a characteristic," saying that it is uncertain. They say, for example, the characteristic of a great man, having a wheel with a thousand spokes, is both the basis of a characteristic and a characteristic that can indicate the basis of other characteristics. For example, this wheel is both the basis of other characteristics of the wheel, such as spokes, hub, and rim, and it is also a characteristic that indicates the basis of another characteristic, which is the great man, therefore, for the time being, considering that conditioned things are the basis of a characteristic, wouldn't they become characteristics of conditioned things just like the basis of a characteristic of conditioned things? Or, conditioned things are the basis of a characteristic, therefore, just like the wheel is a characteristic that is the basis of another characteristic, which is the great man

They say that since becoming the nature of conditioned phenomena is uncertain, it cannot be taken as an example of nature. In response to this statement, here, through explanation, it is shown that the basis of nature is not for the purpose of showing conditioned phenomena themselves on other bases of nature, therefore there is no contradictory aspect, so it is not uncertain. Here, what is intended to be said is that the basis of the nature of conditioned phenomena is not for the purpose of showing conditioned phenomena themselves on other bases of nature. If there were a contradictory aspect, such as the one with a thousand-spoked wheel, this basis of nature would show a great person on other bases of nature, then it would become uncertain. Because there is no such contradictory aspect, it is not uncertain. For example, the basis of nature, the one with a thousand-spoked wheel, shows other meanings of a great person on other bases of nature, but not the conditioned phenomena themselves that are intended to be said, therefore there is no contradictory aspect. Therefore, because conditioned phenomena are also the basis of nature, the basis of the nature of conditioned phenomena is not for the purpose of showing conditioned phenomena themselves on other bases of nature. Moreover, because the wheel is also the basis of nature, it is similar to the great person, which is not shown as conditioned phenomena themselves on other bases of nature, so it is not uncertain. If it is said that even if birth and so on are conditioned phenomena themselves, but because they can produce, abide, and perish, they are the nature of conditioned phenomena. If the opponent thinks like this, even if the three natures of conditioned phenomena, such as birth and so on, are conditioned phenomena themselves, but because they can produce others, they are called birth; because they can abide, they are called abiding; because they can perish, they are called perishing. Even so, they are still the nature of conditioned phenomena, they think like this and say this. To answer this statement, here an explanation is given.
