The Extensive Commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, "The Lamp of Wisdom," Volume Twenty-Eight. Now, in order to demonstrate the absence of inherent existence of the sources by refuting the distinctions of dissimilar births, the third chapter is composed by the power of meaning. Or, in order to demonstrate the emptiness of the sources by refuting dissimilar migrations, the third chapter is composed. Here, the word "by the power of" should be understood as having the meaning of the cause of entering into a pledge in this context, and as having the meaning of being combined with the text that follows. Among these, having made it the power of the meaning of the cause of entering into a pledge, it is said, "Now, by refuting the distinctions of dissimilar births." Having made it the power of the meaning of being combined with the text that follows, it is said, "The third chapter is composed by the power of the meaning of demonstrating the absence of inherent existence of the sources." Or, having made it the power of the meaning of the cause of entering into a pledge, it is said, "By refuting dissimilar migrations." Having made it the power of the meaning of being combined with the text that follows, it is said, "The third chapter is composed in order to demonstrate the emptiness of the sources." It is combined in this way. Now, how is it that "by refuting the distinctions of dissimilar births" is made the power of the meaning of the cause of entering into a pledge? Because when the treatise writer composed the first chapter, "Examination of Conditions," he made a pledge that all phenomena are without birth. Therefore, here, when composing the third chapter, the commentator also, in accordance with how the treatise writer previously made a pledge, makes it the power of the meaning of the cause of entering into that, and says, "Now, by refuting the distinctions of dissimilar births." Birth itself is the dissimilar side of no-birth, therefore it is called "the dissimilar side of birth." "Its distinctions" means that the opponent will assert below that, in ultimate truth, the internal sources are to be apprehended as only birth, because they are definite in their respective objects.
