The elements, such as earth, which were previously established, are the sources of arising. 'By refuting that' means that by relying on the refutation of the distinctions of the category of non-arising, the third analysis is composed. Thus, in terms of the meaning of the cause for engaging in the proposition, if the third analysis is composed by refuting the distinctions of the category of non-arising, then the desired meaning will be accomplished. If you ask, 'In terms of the meaning of showing that all sources are empty of inherent existence, the third analysis is composed,' how does this statement accord with the meaning of connecting with what follows in the text? The meaning of what follows in the text of the third analysis examining the sources is that it shows that all sources are empty of inherent existence. Therefore, since an explanation is also given here when composing the third analysis, in terms of the meaning of connecting with what follows in the text, it is said, 'In terms of the meaning of showing that all sources are empty of inherent existence, the third analysis is composed.' Thus, in the Mahāyāna sūtra it is said: 'Eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body, and likewise mind, those are empty of inherent existence, spoken by the complete Buddhas.' It is also said: 'The eye is empty of the inherent existence of the eye. Likewise, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are empty of the inherent existence of mind. Why? Because their inherent existence is that.' To accomplish those, the third analysis is composed. Thus it is shown that the third analysis is composed in order to show the meaning of previously accomplishing non-arising, and to accomplish what is said in the scriptures that all sources are empty of inherent existence. Furthermore, if you ask, 'By refuting the category of non-arising,' how is that in terms of the meaning of the cause for engaging in the proposition? The author, when composing the first analysis examining arising, made the proposition that all phenomena are without arising. Therefore, since an explanation is also given here when composing the third analysis, how did the previous author

If it is like this, then it falls under the domain of the meaning of the cause of entering into that vow. Or, it is said that because the opposing side is refuted. Because birth itself is the opposing side of non-birth, it is called the opposing side. What is meant by refuting it is that from the perspective of refuting that opposing side, the third chapter is begun. Like this, from the perspective of the meaning of the cause of entering into the vow, if the third chapter is written because the opposing side is refuted, then the desired meaning will be accomplished. In order to show that the skandhas are emptiness, the third chapter is written. Then, how is this connected with the following text, from the perspective of the meaning? The meaning expressed in the following text of the third chapter examining the skandhas is also to show that the skandhas are emptiness. Therefore, when writing the third chapter here, an explanation is also given, so from the perspective of the meaning of connecting with the following text, it is said that the third chapter is written in order to show that the skandhas are emptiness. It is explained like this: In order to explain the meaning of previously proving non-birth, and in order to prove the statements in the scriptures about the skandhas being emptiness, the third chapter is written. When examining it as in the beginning, what is called establishing the opposing side is that now, because the difference of the opposing side of birth is refuted, from the perspective of showing that the skandhas are without self-nature, the third chapter is written. Because the meaning of previously proving non-birth is to be explained, and in order to prove the statements in the scriptures about the skandhas being empty of self-nature, it is said that the third chapter is written. When examining it as in the beginning, establishing the previous opposing side is: the opponent, from the perspective of the ultimate truth in the following text, considers the inner skandhas to be only birth, because they are definite on their respective objects. Like this, the arguments establishing the previous side will appear. Like this, the previous side approaches.
