It is only said, but it is not said that the eye can see objects. You Madhyamikas, using the reasoning methods you speak of to prove that the eye cannot see objects, this is actually using an established view to prove an established view, which is not acceptable. In response to this statement, the commentary here explains that merely because origination is negated, it is not reasonable to think that eye consciousness is not valid, so it is not using an established view to prove an established view. Because in our 'Praise of Dependent Arising,' merely by negating the origination of things from self, other, both, and without cause, we consider the origination of eye consciousness in ultimate truth to be unreasonable, so this is not established for you, therefore it is not using an established view to prove an established view. If the Sautrāntikas say this: Just as it is said in the Sūtras that eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and objects, you, merely by negating origination, consider the origination of eye consciousness to be unreasonable, this would contradict your own commitment. In response to this aforementioned view arising from them, the commentary here explains that this will also not contradict our own commitment, because we commit to the Sūtra view that accords with conventional truth. The Sūtras say that eye consciousness arises dependent on the eye and objects, this is said in conventional truth, and we commit to the Sūtra view that accords with conventional truth, so this will also not contradict our own commitment. If they say that the Sūtra view is said in ultimate truth, then the answer is, because in ultimate truth, the Sūtra view is unreasonable. Because we negate origination in ultimate truth by means of reasoning, and also the Sūtras say: If one clings to the origination of objects, then one is not practicing the Perfection of Wisdom. Because the origination of the sense base of eye and form is negated, and the seer and the seen themselves of eye and form are negated, so it is permissible to be without these distinctions.

Therefore, such statements are to guide the meaning of the following, which will explain the previous verse in another way. Among them, the Vaisheshika school believes that the eye can see objects and hold the uncontacted realm, while the Samkhya school believes that the eye can see objects and hold the contacted realm, these views are not reasonable. Why? Because the arising of the sense-base of eye and form has been prevented, so the eye neither holds the uncontacted form nor the contacted form. Moreover, the seer and the seen of the eye and form themselves have been prevented, so the eye is not the seer, nor is the form the seen, therefore the eye neither holds the uncontacted form nor the contacted form. The difference between holding the uncontacted and holding the contacted, as conceived by the Vaisheshika and Samkhya schools, does not exist, so these do not need to be refuted. Although it can be so, but in order to distinguish the wisdom of the listener, so say a little bit. However, in conventional truth, acknowledging the arising of the sense-bases, and wanting to distinguish the wisdom of the listener, and to understand in detail, so in order to exclude the views of those who think that the eye holds the uncontacted form and holds the contacted form, so also say a little bit here. The verse says: "The seer's own nature, it does not see it." Like before, it shows that not seeing one's own nature is the reason for the property. The first half of this verse previously in ultimate truth, the eye sense cannot see form, because it does not see its own nature, such as the ear and so on. Thus, it shows that not seeing one's own nature is the reason for the property. Similarly, in ultimate truth, form is not the object of the eye sense, because it is accumulated, such as the nature of the eye sense. Thus, it shows that accumulation is the reason for the property. Similarly, here, the first half of this verse shows not seeing one's own nature and being made of the five great elements, as the reason for the property, and then inferring.
