The following should be connected with the statement "The following should also be proven." "When one cannot see oneself, how can one see others?" This statement is for establishing the dharma to be proven, that is, using the latter half of this verse to establish that, previously, from the ultimate point of view, the eye sense actually cannot see forms, because it cannot see itself, just like the ears and so on. This statement is used to establish that it cannot see forms, as the dharma to be proven. Similarly, from the ultimate point of view, forms are not the object of the eye sense, because they are accumulated, just like the nature of the eye sense. This statement is used to establish that it is not the object of the eye sense, as the dharma to be proven. Similarly, here also, the latter half of this verse should be used to establish that it is not the grasping of non-contacting objects, and that the grasping of the eye sense contacting objects is not the grasper. In order to establish the dharma to be proven, the following inferences should be connected. Wanting to eliminate the other's imputed conceptualizations, therefore the connecting statements should be spoken. The statement "The connecting statements should be spoken" here refers to the Vaibhashikas who impute that the eye can see forms and can grasp non-contacting objects. The Samkhyas impute that the eye can see forms and can grasp contacting objects. Wanting to eliminate the other's imputed conceptualizations, therefore, from this point onwards, the connecting statements should be spoken in order. Among them, for those who say "The eye grasps without contact," because seeing means knowing, just like those kings know from their ministers, because they cannot see themselves, this statement is that the Vaibhashikas say that the eye can see forms and can grasp non-contacting objects. In order to refute them, the Madhyamikas say that the eye cannot grasp non-contacting objects. This is a statement to establish this view. The "for those" among them refers to the Vaibhashikas. "The eye grasps without contact" means that the eye can see forms, and the eye sense, abiding in its own position, can grasp external objects, whether near or far, and can only grasp non-contacting objects. That is what they say. That is what they say.

In order to refute those views, the explanation is made here, because 'seeing' means understanding. Therefore, it is said that the root of the word 'seeing' does not mean grasping, but means understanding, so the eye does not grasp the uncontacted form. This is a summary statement. How is that? For example, just as kings understand through wise men. For example, kings understand the situation of other places through the words of wise men, messengers, and eavesdroppers, which is not the meaning of seeing or grasping, but the meaning of understanding. Moreover, this is only an approximate inference arising from the transmission through wise men, etc., and is not direct understanding. Similarly, the eye grasping the uncontacted form is also not the meaning of seeing or grasping, but the meaning of understanding. Moreover, this is only an approximate inference arising from the transmission through other conditions, etc., and is not direct understanding. Why? Because it does not see its own nature. It is said, 'Because it does not see its own nature,' meaning that because the eye faculty does not see its own nature, it does not see other uncontacted things. This is a summary statement. What is the meaning of the reason 'because it does not see its own nature'? Therefore, it is said that the meaning of the reason is not understanding its own nature. Because the root of the word 'seeing' means understanding, the meaning of the reason 'because the eye faculty does not see its own nature' is not understanding its own nature, therefore, not understanding its own nature, it will not grasp uncontacted things. This is how it is connected. Therefore, from the perspective of ultimate truth, the eye is not grasping uncontacted things, because it does not see its own nature, like the nose, etc. It is said, those are also connected in the order of dharma, the proposition to be established, the establishing dharma, and the example. For example, the nose, etc., because it does not see its own nature, is not grasping uncontacted things, similarly, the eye also does not see its own nature, so it is not grasping uncontacted things. Through inference, it can be known that the eye faculty is a thing.
