and examples, combine them in order. For example, consciousness, because it apprehends objects without different efforts and without different times, therefore it apprehends objects that are not in contact. Similarly, the eye, because it apprehends objects without different efforts and without different times, therefore it apprehends objects that are not in contact. If the eye and consciousness were to apprehend objects that are in contact, then in addition to the effort of moving towards the object, the different effort of going to the object's side would also be observed. If there were different efforts, then it would not apprehend during the time it takes to go to the object's side, and when it comes into contact with the object, different times of apprehension would be observed. If that were the case, one would not remember immediately upon thinking with consciousness, and one would not see immediately upon turning the eye. It is when the consciousness and eye reach the object's side that one would recognize and see. If it were like that, it would not be so, because it apprehends without different efforts and apprehends without different times, therefore it apprehends objects that are not in contact, they say. Or, the eye apprehends objects that are not in contact because it apprehends objects that are beyond itself, just like consciousness, they say. This is the third type of valid cognition. Those are also combined in order as the subject, the property to be established, the reason, and the example. For example, just as consciousness, because it apprehends objects beyond itself, apprehends objects that are not in contact, similarly, the eye, because it apprehends objects beyond itself, apprehends objects that are not in contact. If consciousness and the eye were to apprehend objects that are in contact, they would not apprehend objects beyond themselves. If that were the case, the consciousness faculty would not apprehend objects beyond its immediately preceding moment, the continuum of moments, the three times, and the objects of self and others. The eye faculty would also not apprehend objects beyond its own limit, such as distant shouts and vast areas like yojanas. If it were like that, it would not be so, because it apprehends objects beyond itself, therefore it apprehends objects that are not in contact, they say. In response to their saying that, here, by means of explanation, it is said that those are not good either, and so on. Refuting the three types of valid cognition asserted by the Vaisheshikas, saying that these are not good.

It also acts. Among them, why is the statement "because it clings to form with intervals" not good? Therefore, clinging to what does not touch this is the meaning of clinging to form with intervals. And the meaning of the statement "because it clings to form with intervals" is also the same. It is said that "because it is a part of the proposition," which means that the meaning of the proposition "clinging to an object that does not touch this" is clinging to form with intervals itself. And as a reason for establishing it, it is said "because it clings to form with intervals," which is because it is a part of the proposition, so the reason is not established, therefore that is not good. Why is the statement "because it clings without difference in effort and without difference in time" not good? Therefore, it is said that "because it clings without difference in effort and without difference in time" is also because it is not established. Like this, all phenomena such as body, senses, and wisdom do not stay longer than a moment, therefore, if one wants to think and observe, during the period when one does not cling to the object, the temporal difference between the moment of effort and the moment of clinging will constantly cease, so clinging without difference in effort and without difference in time is not established, therefore that is also not good. Why is the statement "because it clings to an object that is superior to itself" not good? That is: When observing one's own nature, It will not see itself, When will it not see itself, How can it see others? Because, according to the stated reason, it has already been established that one cannot see one's own nature, so there is no clinging to an object that is superior to oneself, therefore, that is also not good. Even if the reason is established, pervasion is not established, because the Vaibhashikas and others who do not equally establish do not understand those who differentiate time with subtle momentary continuums, even if the reason "because it clings without difference in effort and without difference in time" is established for you, the example of pervasion is not established in the aspect you infer, therefore that is also not good. Why is the per

If asked, is the example of this inference not established? Therefore, it is said that, in reality, the mind is also not established as holding an uncontacted object. Just as I have refuted that, in reality, the eye does not hold an uncontacted object, and form is not the object held by the eye sense that is uncontacted, so too, in reality, the mind is not established as holding dharma, and dharma is not the object held by the mind sense that is uncontacted. If you say, even for you Madhyamikas, in conventional truth, the mind is not established as holding an uncontacted object, and it is the same for us, therefore our example is not unestablished. Then, in response, it can also be said that this is self-contradictory. You do not want the example to be unestablished in ultimate truth, and if you want to establish it in conventional truth, then it cannot be established in ultimate truth, therefore your establishing it in ultimate truth is self-contradictory, and that is not good either. Twenty-ninth chapter. In this way, having temporarily refuted the conceptual imputation of the Vaibhashikas who hold that the eye grasps an uncontacted object, now, wanting to refute the conceptual imputation of the Samkhyas who hold that the eye grasps a contacted object, if the Samkhyas say that the eye does not grasp an uncontacted object, this is like proving what is already proven. The Samkhyas believe that when the eye sees form, it is in contact, therefore they say that previously the Madhyamikas said in ultimate truth that the eye does not grasp an uncontacted object because it does not see its own nature, like the nose and so on. Similarly, in ultimate truth, form is not the object held by the eye sense that is uncontacted, because it is produced from the four great elements, like smell and so on. These inferences that have been made, on our side, it is already established that the eye grasps a contacted object, so this is proving what is already proven. To their saying this, the explanation here is that, because it merely shows the emptiness of the eye as the nature of grasping an uncontacted object, it has not been shown in the way of establishing the grasping of a contacted object.
