Then, the nature of attachment is dependent on its own nature, because if there is no nature of attachment, the nature of attachment will not arise, just as desire is also dependent on clinging, and if there is no clinging, desire will not arise. Therefore, before there is no clinging, desire itself does not exist, so it will not depend on it to produce clinging later. If there is no clinging, there will be no display of afflictions and their faults, so the other party's reason "in order to display afflictions and faults" is not established. In the ultimate truth, aggregates, elements, and sense bases do not exist. If it is said that without a father, sons, etc. are also impossible, so it is uncertain, then the other party will say that the Madhyamika's reason "because it is dependent" is uncertain. They will say that in the world, fathers and sons, etc. are dependent, but fathers die or go to other places and are not there, and sons, etc. are also possible, so why, because it is dependent, like the nature of clinging, will desire not arise without clinging? Or, because it is dependent, it is like without a father, sons, etc. are also possible. Therefore, your Madhyamika's reason "because it is dependent" is uncertain. They say so. In order to answer what they said, here is an explanation, because it has been prevented, so it will not cause damage. Just as I have prevented desire and clinging from having no precedence in the ultimate truth, I have also prevented fathers and sons, etc. from having no precedence, so there is no incompatible aspect, because it is not uncertain, so your accusation will not harm me. Among the three aspects of desire observation, desire exists before clinging, and clinging exists depending on desire, this first aspect has been proven to be unreasonable. Now, in the three aspects of clinging observation, desire exists later than clinging, and clinging exists depending on desire.

To establish the unreasonableness of the second assertion, it is said here: If it is thought that the moment of attachment that has previously arisen will not produce a moment of clinging, then the cause of the subsequent moment of clinging arising is tantamount to admitting that there is no fault. Here, the previous proponents argue that attachment exists because of the clinging that exists later. They say: What reason is there for us to think that clinging exists because attachment exists? Because in the continuum of every individual, attachment and so on exist in a latent manner, and their own nature cannot be grasped. Therefore, for the moment of attachment that has previously arisen, it is thought that the moment of clinging arises later. If it does not yet exist, then when it encounters conditions and becomes manifest, it will produce clinging. Therefore, the moment of attachment that has previously arisen, thinking that the moment of clinging will not arise, is itself tantamount to admitting the cause of the subsequent moment of clinging arising. So, if you think that attachment exists without clinging, you will commit the fault of something existing without a basis. They say that we do not have this fault. To answer what they say, it is explained here: Even if attachment exists, how can there be clinging? Your attachment exists, but how can there be clinging? If attachment exists, clinging will arise, then clinging is not produced by that attachment. If it is not clinging, how can clinging arise? If clinging arises, then it will never become non-clinging, which is not desired. Therefore, the moment of attachment that has previously arisen, thinking that the moment of clinging will not arise, is itself unreasonably becoming the cause of the subsequent moment of clinging arising. To show this, it is said: It will not exist, because the moment of attachment that depends on the previous moment of mind ceases simultaneously with that previous moment of mind.

Since a moment of desire that has the characteristic of having arisen previously is not the cause of wanting a later moment of attachment to arise, even if there is desire, there will be no attachment. Here, other debaters say, "If that is the case, then how will the term 'attachment' exist?" In order to answer this previous point raised by the opponent, the commentary here explains: Since a moment of desire, due to its difference in time, cannot make a later moment of attachment become attachment. That is to say, the moment of desire that depends on the previous moment of mind ceases together with that previous moment of mind, so the previous moment of desire, due to its difference in time, cannot make a later moment of attachment become attachment. Therefore, the term 'attachment' is merely a conventional expression and does not exist in ultimate truth. Here, other debaters say, "How can the subsequent moment of desire that arises from the cessation of the previous moment of desire make the subsequent moment of mind that arises simultaneously with it become attachment? Therefore, the moment of desire that has the characteristic of having arisen previously is not the cause of wanting a moment of attachment to arise, but it itself is the cause of wanting a subsequent moment of attachment to arise." In order to answer this previous point raised by the opponent, the commentary here explains: "For example, just as one color cannot make another become colored." That is to say, in ultimate truth, the moment of desire that depends on the moment of mind does not make the subsequent moment of mind become attachment, because it is other. For example, just as the act of dyeing in Lhas-byin's house cannot make the other rice in Chö-din's house become colored, in order to show that it is equally unreasonable, in order to show another reason, because the past moment of desire cannot make the present become attachment, it will become a harm to inference. That is what it means. If the past moment of desire makes the subsequent moment of mind become attachment, then
