Before the arising of attachment, if there is desire without attachment, what does that mean? It means that before the arising of attachment, there is desire without attachment, and based on this prior desire, the later attachment arises. That is to say, this prior desire without attachment causes this previously non-existent attachment to arise later. In this way, if the other party, according to their own thinking, relies on this prior desire without attachment for the later attachment to arise, then what fault would there be? Therefore, I said, "Therefore, if that is the case, there will be such a fault." What fault? I said, "If it is because it produces attachment, then it is desire," and so on. That is, according to grammar, when something produces attachment, at that time it is itself desire, that is to say, this is arguing for the entity of desire. Because the entity depends on the basis, it does not exist before the basis, this sentence indicates: the entity, which is the nature of desire, is dependent, and the thing that produces desire is its basis, therefore, the entity depends on the basis, so before the "arising of attachment" as the basis, the desire that depends on it should not exist. For example, color does not exist before the rice field, this is a metaphor, for example, color is dependent, and the rice field is the basis, just as there is no color before the rice field, desire is dependent, and the arising of attachment is the basis, so there is no desire before the arising of attachment. Therefore, if the other party, according to their own thinking, relies on this prior desire without attachment for the later attachment to arise, then just as there is color before there is no rice field, it would be a fault to have desire before there is no arising of attachment, which is not acceptable. If it is thought that desire exists without relying on the arising of attachment, then there will also be other faults, that is, "If there is desire, then the arising of attachment should also exist," this sentence indicates that if the other party, according to their own thinking, if there is desire before the arising of attachment, then there is a prior desire that does not depend on the arising of attachment, and the word "desire" itself

Later arising occurs dependent on the previously existing self-nature. If that is the case, there will be the fault of dependence existing before the basis. The statement "That is not allowed" means that the existence of desire before arising contradicts all terms and is therefore not allowed. However, if it is asserted that desire exists dependent on arising, then it should not be admitted that desire exists before arising. Therefore, to illustrate this point, an example known to the world is given, saying, "Just as it is unreasonable for ripening to occur without depending on ripening itself." For example, just as it is unreasonable for the act of cooking to arise without depending on the cooking of grain, and it is unreasonable for the act of ripening to arise without depending on the ripening of fruit, similarly, it is unreasonable for desire to arise without depending on arising itself. Thus, here too, because it is a flawed statement, inference should be done by diverting from the current meaning. The statement "because it is a flawed statement" means that according to the opponent's desired idea, if desire exists before arising, and arising exists dependent on that desire, then there will be the fault of action existing without depending on a basis, because it is a flawed statement. What is the current meaning in the statement "diverting from the current meaning"? It is the current meaning of the flawed statement, that is, desire exists even without arising. This is not permissible, so by diverting from that current meaning, inference should be applied here by understanding another meaning, that is, desire itself does not exist before arising, so it is impossible for arising to occur later dependent on it, and if there is no arising, then there is no affliction and no showing of its faults, so the opponent's reason, that is, affliction and showing faults, is shown to be unestablished. Desire is of a nature that does not arise without arising, because it is dependent, for example, like the self-nature of arising itself. These are respectively the subject, the dharma to be proven, the dharma that proves, and the example, to be combined in order, for example,
