Because the meaning of being known as nothing whatsoever of space, in order to show the example of thoroughly proving that earth and so on are also nothing whatsoever, therefore, it is first shown that the establishment of space as nothing whatsoever. Whatever also says that it is similar to space, that is, whatever other five elements there are, those should also be refuted as similar to space. How so? The very element of space in the past, space does not exist even slightly. Starting from this, up to therefore space is not a thing, not a non-thing, not a basis, not a characteristic, in between, just as that shows the refutation of space, here also. Earth and so on, characteristics in the past, earth and so on do not exist even slightly. Starting from this, up to therefore earth and so on are not things, not non-things, not a basis, not a characteristic, in between, it should be widely spoken, and whatever other five elements there are, because the refutation is the same as space, therefore it should be shown as similar. That is to say, just as in the past, when examining space, the characteristic of space in the past, space does not exist even slightly. If it arises before the characteristic, then it would be a fault of being without characteristic. A thing without characteristic, does not exist anywhere at all. A non-thing without characteristic, where does the characteristic take effect? The characteristic does not take effect on the characteristicless, nor on the characteristic-possessing. The characteristic possessing a characteristic, other than the characteristicless, also does not take effect on others. If the characteristic does not take effect, the basis will not be established. If the basis is not established, the characteristic also does not exist. Therefore the basis does not exist, the characteristic itself also does not exist. A thing other than the basis and characteristic also does not exist. If a thing does not exist, whose will the non-thing be? Things and non-things are incompatible dharmas, with what does one know things and non-things? Therefore space is not a thing, not a non-thing, not a basis, not a characteristic. Like this, using the replies of establishment and refutation and so on, if one examines space, it is neither a thing, nor a non-thing, nor a basis of characteristic, nor a characteristic, showing that the name space is nothing whatsoever, here also. Earth and so on, characteristics in the past.

Beginning with "Earth, etc., are not even a little present," it should be extensively explained up to "Therefore, earth, etc., are not real objects, nor are they unreal, nor are they the basis of characteristics, nor are they characteristics." And with answers that include establishment and refutation, it should be explained that those five elements, such as earth, etc., are neither real objects, nor are they unreal, nor are they the basis of characteristics, nor are they characteristics. It should also be shown that those five elements, such as earth, etc., are nothing at all. Here, others say, if the six elements are indeed without inherent existence, why did the Blessed One say to King Śuddhodana, "Great King, these six elements are persons," and show that the characteristics of the six elements—earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness—are hardness, fluidity, separation, and the act of distinguishing? To answer the aforementioned objection raised from that point, the commentary here explains that in the Blessed One's teachings, the elements are shown to exist in that way because by showing them in that way, out of compassion for many beings to be tamed, it belongs to conventional truth, which is renowned in name, but in ultimate truth, the elements do not exist. Having said that, in order to tame, grasp, and firmly establish those beings to be tamed by showing those elements, out of compassion for beginners such as King Śuddhodana, he said, relying on the power of what is renowned in name, "Great King, these six elements are persons," and showed that the characteristics of the six elements—earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness—are hardness, wetness, warmth, movement, separation, and the act of distinguishing; those belong to conventional truth, but in ultimate truth, the elements do not exist. In the Blessed One's teachings, why is it called teachings? Because whatever speech gives advice and guidance on the four truths to be fully known, abandoned, realized, and cultivated, that is the teachings.
