When it is said, "Having completely transcended the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' thereby perfecting the sphere of infinite consciousness and abiding," the yogi thinks, "My conception of 'space is infinite' is not real, it is merely a conceptualization of consciousness." Thus, he completely transcends the sphere of infinite space, thinking 'consciousness is infinite,' thereby perfecting the sphere of infinite consciousness and abiding. At that time, although the yogi has desire and attachment for the realm of consciousness, the desire and attachment for the realm of space will diminish, therefore desire and space are not real. When the yogi abandons the desire and attachment for the realm of consciousness and enters into the realm of nothingness, he completely transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing,' thereby perfecting the sphere of nothingness and abiding. When it is said, "The yogi thinks, 'My conception of "consciousness is infinite" is not real, it is nothing,'" he completely transcends the sphere of infinite consciousness, thinking 'there is nothing,' thereby perfecting the sphere of nothingness and abiding. At that time, although the yogi has desire and attachment for the realm of nothingness, the desire and attachment for the realm of consciousness will diminish, therefore desire and consciousness are not real. When the yogi abandons the desire and attachment for the realm of nothingness and enters into the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, he completely transcends the sphere of nothingness, thereby perfecting the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception and abiding. When it is said, "The yogi thinks, 'My conception of "nothingness" is not real, it is neither existence nor non-existence,'"

Therefore, when (the Buddha) said that he had completely transcended the sphere of nothingness and perfected the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception and dwelt in it, although the yogi had desire and attachment for the realm of neither existence nor non-existence, the desire and attachment for the realm of nothingness would be reversed, so desire and nothingness are not real entities. Beyond that, the path of the peak of existence itself cannot generate a path that transcends the world. Therefore, at that time, the yogi sees that all desires, attachments, form, space, consciousness, nothingness, and all perceptions of neither existence nor non-existence are without self-nature, and with the Vajra-like Samadhi, he enters into Samadhi in a way that is without an object of focus. Perfect enlightenment of omniscience is the result of seeing emptiness. Thus, just as it is said in the history of the Sutra Pitaka, all phenomena such as space are without entity. You rely on the scriptural authority of the Sutra Pitaka and show reasoning and examples to prove that space is real, which shows that you yourselves are very ignorant of the history of the Sutra Pitaka. Here, the Sutra Pitaka masters say: Because our space has not been established as real, in order to abandon the desire and attachment for the unestablished object, it is like form. And, because it is the object of meditative absorption, it is like consciousness and so on, although these arguments and examples have not been established, we can also say that because it is an unconditioned phenomenon, it is like Nirvana, this argument and example is also established for you, therefore our argument and example is established, so space is established as real. In order to answer this preliminary question raised from them, the commentary is made here, saying: Because Nirvana and anything else have not been established as real. Nirvana and unconditioned phenomena, etc., do not truly exist as entities in the ultimate sense.

Because there is not, your reason and example do not hold, this is a concluding statement. This refutes the arguments of other schools, that the sky exists because it is completely without form and is unconditioned. It should be said that the meaning of the reason is not established, as it is said: Apart from name and definition, things do not exist. As the reason shown, this also refutes the arguments of other schools, that those who say that the sky exists, because the basis is not established, the reason and example are not established. Their reason for proving that the sky exists is "because it is completely without form" and "because it is unconditioned," for these claims, it should also be explained according to the circumstances that the fault of the meaning not being established. Their argument should also be connected in order with the subject, the object to be proven, and the means of proof. For example, "the sky exists because it is completely without form," because form can be completely distinguished in the sky, but form cannot be distinguished in the argument. Or, the sky exists because it is both the ultimate of form and is not formed, so it is completely without form. Furthermore, the sky, cessation, and suchness are also existent because they are unconditioned. For these, the faults of reason and example should also be stated as before, according to the circumstances. The Sautrāntikas say: The sky itself is not a real entity, so what is it? For us, it is merely the absence of obstructive substantial matter. This both negates the previous view of the Vaibhāṣikas and others that the sky is a real entity, and here, the Sautrāntikas say: You Madhyamikas deny that the sky is not a real entity, this is committing the fault of proving what is already established. Why? Because in our treatises, the sky itself is not a real entity, but it is already established that it is merely the absence of obstructive substantial matter. This is the response to what they say.
