If it is said, "The seer does not see its own nature, therefore it does not see that," then what have you, the Madhyamikas, accomplished? When it is said that the eye does not see its own nature, we admit that the eye sees the form of other objects, therefore our assertion will not diminish, thinking this in our minds, we say so. In response to this statement, the commentator here says that what you assert, that is, the meaning of the sentence, "When one does not see one's own nature, how can one see another? The eye has no power to see form." What you assert, that the eye can see the form of other objects, has also been proven by us to be unseen. How is it proven? Therefore, it is said, "When one does not see one's own nature, how can one see another?" The meaning of this verse is that the eye has no power to see form. Here, the first half of the verse shows the dharma of the eye not seeing its own nature, that is, the first half of the verse "The seer does not see its own nature, therefore it does not see that," shows that the dharma of the eye not seeing form is not seeing its own nature. The second half shows the dharma to be proven, that is, not seeing form, which is "When one does not see one's own nature, how can one see another?" The second half of this verse shows that the dharma to be proven for the subject, the eye, is not seeing form. The example is the dharma to be proven and the dharma that proves, and the subject that is famous in both is the ear, etc. Therefore, placing the dharma to be proven and the dharma that proves close together is considered a connecting word, that is, below will be the subject, the dharma to be proven, the dharma that proves, and the example placed close together. Therefore, in the ultimate truth, the eye faculty actually cannot see form, because it does not see its own nature, just like the ear, etc.

Having said that, those subjects, the dharma to be proven, the proving dharma, and the example are also applied in order. For example, because the ears and so on do not see their own nature, they do not see form. Similarly, the eye faculty also does not see its own nature, so it does not see form. That inference shows that the eye faculty does not see form. Alternatively, the first half shows that the eye faculty is not the object to be grasped, and then the eye faculty itself is placed as a similar example, that is, or, "The seer's own nature, it does not see it." The first half of this verse shows that the eye faculty itself is not the object to be grasped by the eye faculty, and then the eye faculty itself is placed as a similar example of form not being the object of the eye faculty. The second half shows that the eye faculty does not see form, thus showing the dharma to be proven, that form is not the object of the eye faculty. That is, "When one's own nature is not seen, how can it see others?" The second half of this verse shows that the eye faculty does not see form, thus showing the dharma to be proven on the subject form, that it is not the object of the eye faculty. Here, the words connected by its power mean that the dharma to be proven, the proving dharma, and the similar example here, become the words connected by its power, which are the close connections of the subject, the dharma to be proven, the proving dharma, and the example from below. Therefore, ultimately, form is not the object of the eye faculty, because it is accumulated, like the nature of the eye faculty. Having said that, those subjects, the dharma to be proven, the proving dharma, and the example are also applied in order. For example, the nature of the eye faculty is not the object of the eye faculty because it is accumulated, similarly, form is also not the object of the eye faculty because it is accumulated. That inference shows that form is not the object of the eye faculty.

English

To. Not seeing one's own nature and accumulation is because one only grasps the manner of the sound of characteristics. Because of things that are obstructed, and things that have changed from arising, and the form that is the cause, and belonging to the aggregate of form, etc. Therefore, inferences should also be stated for both viewpoints. The meaning of "In the viewer's own nature, it does not see it; when one does not see one's own nature, how can it see others?" is that the reason why the eye faculty does not see form is that it does not see its own nature. The reason why form is not the object of the eye faculty is because of accumulation. This is only to slightly grasp the manner of the sound of characteristics, it is only a symbol. The reasons for both of these viewpoints are also things that are obstructed, etc. This is a summary word. For example, if one says to guard against crows, it does not mean not to guard against dogs. Similarly, here, saying that one's own nature is not seen, and accumulation, as reasons, does not mean that things that are obstructed, etc., cannot be reasons. Thus it is declared: Ultimately, the eye faculty does not see form, because it is something that is obstructed, or because it is something that has changed from arising, or because it is the form that is the cause, or because it belongs to the aggregate of form, etc., like the ear, etc. Or, ultimately, form is not the object of the eye faculty, because it is something that is obstructed, or because it is something that has changed from arising, or because it is the form that is the cause, or because it belongs to the aggregate of form, etc., like the nature of the eye faculty. Because the valid cognition has been previously declared, inferences should be stated for both viewpoints. Here, some say that the eye does not see its own nature because it is invisible, which is acceptable; but form is visible, therefore it can see it. What they say is that here, other schools acknowledge the Madhyamika's statement that "form is not the object of the eye faculty" and criticize it.
