If not for its cause, color cannot be seen. Thus, when observing color based on its cause, if it is so, then this, with the dharma to be established of color, is merely an aggregation of earth and so on; if the dharma that establishes color does not take its own cause, then it shows that there is no awareness of it. For example, depending on that, like armies and forests, and so on. Here, the subsequent inference is that, in the ultimate sense, color is not substantially existent, because if it does not take its own cause, then there is no awareness of it. Here, whatever does not take its own cause, then there is no awareness of it, that is not substantially existent, like armies and so on. Likewise, color also does not take its own cause, earth and so on, because there is no awareness of color, therefore it is not substantially existent. Furthermore, there is another way of connecting, in the ultimate sense, the awareness of color is not an object of substantially existent things, because it is awareness, like the awareness of forests and so on. Furthermore, there is another way of connecting, in the ultimate sense, the sound called color is not an object of substantially existent meaning of words, because it is sound, like the sound of armies and so on. Consciousness and mental factors should also be negated in the same way because they are of the same kind as what is to be established, therefore it is not an uncertain reason. Thus, by connecting what is to be established with the establishing dharma, and extensively explaining the inference, in the same way, here, if not for what is called color, the cause of color also does not appear. Thus, when observing arising color, if it is so, then this, with the dharma to be established of arising color, is merely an aggregation of color and so on, if the dharma that establishes arising color, color and so on, does not appear, then it shows that earth and so on also do not appear. For example, depending on that, like armies and forests, and so on. Here, the subsequent inference is that one should know that in the ultimate sense, earth is not substantially existent, because if its cause does not appear, then it does not appear. Whatever cause does not appear, then that does not appear, that is not substantially existent in the ultimate sense, like armies and so on. Likewise, time also does not take its own cause, like narrowness and shape, and so on.

Because there is no wisdom of earth, it is not substantially existent. Or there is another way of reasoning: In reality, the wisdom of earth is not an object with substantially existent things, because it is wisdom, like the wisdom of forests and so on. Or there is another way of reasoning: In reality, the sound called "earth" is not an object with the meaning of words being substantially existent, because it is a sound, like the sound of armies and so on. Consciousness and mental factors should also be refuted in the same way, because they are of the same kind as the things that need to be established, therefore it is not an uncertain reason. The things that need to be established and the established dharmas should be closely combined, and the inference should be elaborated in detail. If things like form are not other, then things like earth are also not other than form, which means: if the form and earth, etc., which are the cause, are not other, then by explaining in a way that denies non-existence, earth and so on are one with the form and so on, which are the cause, and this is not explained in a way that denies it; similarly, earth and so on are not other than the form that is the cause, then by explaining in a way that denies non-existence, earth and so on are one with the form that is the cause, and this is also not explained in a way that denies it, this is the final word. Why does saying not other indicate being one? Therefore, it is said below, "Because it is also necessary to refute not other," because from the section on the analysis of encounters below, oneness will also be refuted. If saying not other becomes one, what is the fault? Therefore, it is said below, "Because not other, milk will also become yogurt, or yogurt will also become milk, which is not acceptable," if it is said to be one, then milk will also be one with yogurt, and yogurt will also be one with milk, which would be a fault, which is not acceptable. Because that is not desired, therefore, refuting not other does not establish oneness. Thus, it is neither other nor one.
