Here, The treatise maker only reveals the aggregates, thereby only revealing the negation of substantial existence. The reason for negating it is that it is of great significance. Here, the treatise maker, the venerable Nāgārjuna himself, reveals that forms and so on that arise in conventional truth are merely aggregates, thereby only revealing the negation of their substantial existence in ultimate truth. The reason for negating them is that the author's own view is supreme, so it is of great significance. If someone asks: How is that of great significance? As an answer, I say: Here, whatever relies on designation to be established, because it does not substantially exist in ultimate truth, it is unborn, therefore it is established as without self-nature. In conventional designation, whatever is established, distinguished, and shown relying on any basis, because it does not substantially exist in ultimate truth, it is unborn, therefore it is established as without self-nature. Therefore, merely revealing the aggregates, thereby negating substantial existence, is of great significance. If asked: How is the merit of merely revealing the aggregates known? Therefore, in the *Holy Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra*, it says: "Because apart from aggregates, consciousness does not apprehend objects, therefore I speak of emptiness, as well as unborn and without self-nature. In this, caused by conditions, there is no slight arising or ceasing. Arising and ceasing are only the conditions." And so on. Because apart from aggregates, collections, and assemblies, there is no object that can be grasped as a substantial entity, therefore, since things are not established as substantial entities, in ultimate truth they are emptiness, unborn, and without self-nature, I say. For this, the substantial existence of the causes and conditions, no other thing causes arising and ceasing, and saying arising and ceasing in designation is merely the conditions. And so on, as it is said in the sutra. Here, the connecting words are: It should be known that in ultimate truth, earth does not substantially exist, because if its cause does not appear, it will not appear.

If the cause is not apparent, then that non-appearance is not truly existent in reality, like an army, etc. These should also be related in order to the subject, the object to be proven, the means of proof, and the example of similar instances. For example, armies, etc., if the four elements, etc., are not apparent, then they are also not apparent, therefore they are not truly existent in reality. Similarly, if the earth and its cause, the aggregation of form and sound, etc., which are encompassed by the nature of color and shape, are not apparent, then it is also not apparent, therefore it is not truly existent in reality. Similarly, for the aspects of consciousness and sound, one should state accordingly. Here, as before, there are other ways of combining. In reality, the consciousness of earth is not an object that possesses a truly existent entity, because it is consciousness, like the consciousness of forests, etc. Or, there is another way of combining. In reality, the sound called "earth" is not an object that possesses a truly existent meaning of words, because it is sound, like the sound of armies, etc. Similarly, for consciousness and mental factors, one should also refute them in the same way, being similar to what is to be proven, therefore it is not an uncertain reason, one should state accordingly. Or, apart from the cause of form, etc., there is no other form that can be pointed out, if one grasps its own cause, then it is ungraspable, this is the nature of form. That is to say, or, apart from the cause of form as a result, that is, earth, etc., there is no other form as a result apart from earth, etc., that can be pointed out. Through this way, one should also show that the produced form is without self-nature. Why? If one does not grasp the own cause of the form as a result, that is, earth, etc., then the form as a result is ungraspable. This is the means of proof for establishing that the form as a result is without self-nature. The words of combination here are: In reality, form is not different from the parts of its own collection, because if one does not grasp it, there is no consciousness of it, for example
