There is no permanence, and it shows impermanence. What are the merits of showing that dependent arising is uninterrupted and impermanent, and in order to dispel others saying that this teaching is only barely established by dry logical treatises, here it should also be established by the source of reliable scriptures. Therefore, in the Sutra Requested by the One Who Subdues Completely with Supreme Effort, the Mother Bhagavati Prajnaparamita, it says: The one who completely subdues with supreme effort, there is no object of annihilation or object of permanence in form. Similarly, there is no object of annihilation or object of permanence in feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness. What is it that there is no object of annihilation or object of permanence in form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness? That is Prajnaparamita. And so on. Similarly, in the Holy Samadhiraja Sutra, it says: Existence and non-existence are both extremes. Purity and impurity are both extremes. Therefore, having completely abandoned both extremes, the wise do not dwell even in the middle. And so on. Similarly, in other endings of the Sutra Pitaka, it says: Just as children discriminate, all things are existent. If one sees it as it is, all will see it as it is. Since all dharmas are not existent, there is no affliction and no purity. How does one see

By refuting the differences in viewpoints that contradict emptiness, thereby revealing the meaning of samsara and nirvana as being without inherent existence, the sixteenth chapter of the treatise is composed, called "Making." Among them, the word "because" should also be understood here as containing the meaning of the reason for the commitment, and should be understood in conjunction with the following discussion. The meaning of the words is as before. Therefore, with the reason of containing the meaning of the commitment, now it is said, "Similarly, by refuting the differences in viewpoints that contradict emptiness." When the treatise writer composed the first chapter of the "Examination of Conditions," he promised that all things are without arising, therefore, with the reason of containing the meaning of the commitment, he said so. The word "similarly" refers to the same principles as explained in the previous chapter. Emptiness is one's own side, and the opposing viewpoint is the other side, that is, claiming that things have inherent existence. Therefore, the word "difference" refers to the claims made by the other party in the previous text in order to prove that things have inherent existence, such as "From the perspective of ultimate truth, inner things themselves have inherent existence, because they have bondage and liberation," and so on. The so-called "refutation" means that by refuting these claims, the sixteenth chapter is composed. With the meaning of combining the following discussion, it is said, "By revealing the meaning of samsara and nirvana as being without inherent existence, the sixteenth chapter of the treatise is composed." That is, the meaning of the sixteenth chapter of the treatise examining bondage and liberation is to show that samsara and nirvana are without inherent existence, so it is said. So, what is the result of this chapter? And in what way is this result obtained? Showing that samsara and nirvana are without inherent existence is the result of this chapter, and this result can be obtained by refuting the differences in viewpoints that contradict emptiness.

Therefore, in order to obtain, the explanation is made, and in this occasion of connecting the explanation, only the method and the first fruit arising from the method are shown. The reason for mentioning "the difference of the incompatible side of emptiness" is to show that. Here it is said "here it is said" etc., because the external opponents, although they have previously refuted their argument that things have self-nature in the ultimate sense, some of them are still attached to it and say this again. Therefore, in the ultimate sense, internal things only have self-nature, because they have bondage and liberation. If here, for something that is determined to be non-existent, then bondage and liberation are not reasonable, like the son of a barren woman. Since internal things are not without such bondage and liberation, therefore they exist, so in the ultimate sense, internal things only have self-nature, so it is said. Those are the subject, and the dharma to be established, and the dharma that can establish, and the example of the incompatible side of the dharma, and the argument of close combination, and the conclusion, combined in order. Here, for the non-existent things such as the son of a barren woman, those without bondage and liberation, in the ultimate sense do not have self-nature; for the internal things, those with bondage and liberation, in the ultimate sense only have self-nature, they say. In order to refute it, and to compose the sixteenth chapter with the meaning of the selflessness of samsara and nirvana, therefore, in order to answer what they said, the commentator himself says here: Here, from beginningless time, blinded by the darkness of ignorance accumulated by habituation, seized by the crocodile of clinging to self and what belongs to self, like illusion, dream, mirage, sentient beings who truly transcend from the prison of samsara, bound by the iron chains of afflictions such as desire, is bondage. Because correct wisdom arises, and is freed from the bondage of the iron chains of afflictions such as desire, and is completely liberated from it, is liberation.
