Therefore, if it is not, then the meaning of your reason is not established. If you propose the reason, 'Because it is the cause of the mind that exists conventionally,' then this contradicts your assertion that 'in the ultimate sense, the sources are only existent in their own nature.' There is also another fault: to say 'existent' is to grasp at permanence, and to say 'non-existent' is to view it as annihilation. Both of these are bad views because they are obstacles to higher realms and liberation. This is revealing the fault of clinging to the extremes of existence and non-existence. To show that these two are obstacles to higher realms and liberation, (it can be said that) if (everything) is permanent, then whatever is happy will always be happy, and whatever is suffering will always be suffering. Therefore, in order to generate happiness and to pacify suffering, one would not engage in all the paths that lead to the cessation of suffering, because it is unreasonable to act upon what already exists. If (everything) is annihilation, then for what does not exist, complete affliction and complete purification, suffering and happiness, are unreasonable. Then who would properly take vows and enter (into practice), and why would they enter? Because it is unreasonable to enter into what does not exist.' This is what is said. Therefore, because both of these extremes have great faults, to show that the wise should not abide in them, it is said: Therefore, the wise should not abide in existence and non-existence. Therefore, because viewing existence and non-existence is faulty, the wise desire to transcend the solitude of samsara, which is to say they desire to transcend samsara and attain nirvana, and to experience the easily obtained pleasures of goddesses in the cities of gods in the heavenly realms and gardens, which is to say they desire to experience heavenly bliss, and to experience the bliss of the cessation of all feelings, which is to say they desire to experience the liberation of hearers and solitary realizers, and to experience the bliss of the complete pacification of all speech, which is to say they desire to experience the bliss of attaining Buddhahood, and possessing oneself, which is to say joining oneself with happiness and having the thought that oneself needs happiness.

One should not dwell on the existence or non-existence of things, because dwelling on these would lead to the fault of falling into the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Thus it is said. To explain this reason, how does viewing existence and non-existence lead to viewing permanence and annihilation? Whatever has inherent existence, Is permanent because it is not non-existent. Saying that what existed before does not exist now, Therefore, it will fall into annihilation. Thus it is said. If here, others say this: The Madhyamikas also assert that everything exists in conventional truth, therefore they will incur the fault of asserting permanence; and they assert that it does not exist in ultimate truth, therefore they will incur the fault of asserting annihilation. To refute this previous view, here, by explaining, it is stated: The Madhyamikas consider nominal designations as mere labels, therefore these arisen forms, etc., exist because they are the cause of the consciousness of existence; but for those who say that what has not arisen and has not ceased does not exist, such a fault will not occur. In ultimate truth, since the nature to be realized is emptiness and is unborn, there is no clinging to existence. In ultimate truth, things are not inherently non-existent, because they possess causes and conditions, like an illusion, therefore there is no clinging to non-existence either; or because there is no clinging to the consciousness of existence and non-existence, there is no falling into the two extremes of existence and non-existence. Thus it is said. Therefore, the meaning of the discussion here is that by refuting the distinctions of the side that is incompatible with emptiness, it is shown that dependent arising does not fall into annihilation or permanence. This is the conclusion and the result of valid cognition. In this fifteenth chapter, which examines things and non-things, viewing the meaning of the discussion as the result of valid cognition is because others consider emptiness to be incompatible with their views, and they vow that things have no inherent nature, which contradicts their own words, because they deny that meaning, like saying "everything said is false." By refuting everything they say, it is shown that dependent arising does not fall into
